C1 (1960) Courtesy light switch location

I just noticed that the courtsey light switch (the ones on the door pillar) seem to be in the wrong location on my 1960 corvette.

I have attached two pictures, the one titled "Courtesy light switch" is of my 1960 corvette that I purchased to complete a restoration. As you can see, there is a hole for a switch that is between the door hinges and a little inward on the door pillar. When I bought the car, it has switches in these holes, connected to nothing, and were the kind that just pop in.

The other picture titled "Picture from web" shows what I assume is the correct location, beside the upper door hinge and held in place by a plate and two screws.

I have felt around the inside of the door pillar in the location by the upper door hinge and it does not seem to have any patch work, so doesn't seem to every had a hole in that location.

Since I bought the car, I have found the restoration work done so far by a previous owner is very shoddy at best, but I can't imagine why anyone would change the location of these switchs, both sides are the same.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this?

Also, anyone with a 58, 59 or 60, can you tell me if at the correct location is there simply a round hole for the switch to fit into and the bracket is surface mounted with the two screws, i.e. I assume there is no indention in the door pillar that the bracket fits into.

    Thanks,

    Don Harris

Courtesy lights were an option in 1960. Sounds like your car never came with them and someone tried to add them after the fact.

      Don:
The location and installation shown in the second picture is the way my 60 came with factory installed courtesy light.

Howard my 1960 never come with the courtesy light option. My car has a rectangle indentation on both sides where your hole is on the red car. I could see that if someone was to put a courtesy switch in the door they would think it goes in the indentation. I can't see why else the indentation would be there. But it is way lower than the white car ! If you want me to take a photo I will to show the indentation.
Mr Durham does your white beauty have courtesy light option. Is yours in the same posi as the second photo. Stewy

          Don:

My '59 had courtesy lights from the factory, and they are in the upper location (OE 'glass). There is no indent and they are mounted with two screws. There is an indent in the 'glass where your (red car) switches are mounted.

the indent of which you speak is for the power window window conduits, if one were to mount the courtesy light switch in that local the wire harness would not reach it, i agree that it is a non factory install.

                      Don,
My '60 came with courtesy light/switches installed from the factory. The placement of the door jam switches matches your second picture. I have attached pictures before and after restoration. You will note that the hole for the switch is round and near top door hinge mount. My car completed its first Regional with flying colors (98.3) earlier this year.

                      Good luck with your restoration!

Mr Kirchhoff Wow 98.3 that is an amazing score. I wish I can obtain a score close to that one day. Now just to clarify your car must be an early car can you tell me is it younger than Jim Durham's car. 3714# I was trying to work out why his has no indentations and our cars have them ? Stewy

                          Stewy,
Mine is #4240, so later than Jim's. There is a very faint indent if any near the center of the door jamb. Are you refering to the indents for the hinges near the top and bottom of the jamb?
Do you have a picture of your jamb you can post?

Stewy, You sure have good eyes. I couldn't see the indents in Davids picture so I had to go check mine again. There are "very faint" indents in mine. After blowing up Davids picture, I can see his are very faint as well. Mine were never filled in since it had the original paint when I got it and I'm the one that re-painted it. They are easier to feel than to see.
