There is also a ratchet tool manufactured by Signode (amd others) which pulls and holds the band tight around the spring leaves.

I'm also in need of banding on c1 4-leaf springs, and heard about the serrated marks judges are looking for. Anyone do this or ideas?

Jim - Here's an article a couple of us in the Texas Chapter put together on C1 Corvette leaf spring banding. See if this answers your question and perhaps a lot more on the process. Tim

                Re: Rear Spring Banding

Does anyone know if the Signode crimp tool that Corvette Central rents out will create the correct inverse single crimp ? Does anyone know the model of this crimper ? Mine is a C-5823 and it creates the opposite crimp of what I need.

Also, has anyone successfully been able to straighten and reuse original Signode Clips ? If so, please share tips on how this can be done. Does anyone know a source for reproduction clips that are stamped "SIGNODE CHICAGO" like the original clips ?

                  Re: Rear Spring Banding

I have a Signode banding tool. The bands that come in the kits are too short to actually use the tool to pull the band tight. But I run the repo bands through the tool before I install them and that process puts the marks on the bands.

Over the years I've seen several different mark patterns on original bands. They are made by the grippers in the tool. It is thus clear that Signode had tools with various configurations of gripper teeth.

A friend of mine had correct band clamps made copying the Signode Chicago imprint. I was fortunate to get two sets for two cars. Now he has no more left.

I did read of one person who said he reused the original clamps. Probably tricky but not impossible.

I'am sure that Richard Mozzetta has a trick or two on how to do this maybe he will post at some point.

HAVE RE-USED ORIGINAL SIGNOID CLAMPS SEVERAL TIMES. but best way is to slide the intact bands with clamp attached to the ends of the main left after cutting away the old rubber. then install new rubber and slide the clipped bands back to their original locations. mike

Just to keep in mind: The bands from one company were only 5 - 6" long, then way too short because I used the liners. The tool that I rented from another had a spacer bar that you were supposed to wrap the band around to get the approximate shape & corners. This also didn't work if you're including liners. At least they supplied 12" long bands. Another hard part is not crimping the rubber along with the bands & clamp. Jim

Agree about not getting the rubber caught in the crimping. I slid a small spare piece of banding temporarily under the clamp to be crimped to keep the tool away from the rubber.

Mark - We have a 2nd article published in the 1st quarter 2013 Texas Chapter newsletter about reconfiguring a Signode crimping tool. Bill restacked the cutting dies to change the result from a "double upward crimp" to a "single downward crimp" which matches to original C1 style.

The Signode tool I have produces the correct single downward crimp without restacking the dies. When I get home from a trip, I'll get that model number for you.

Here's the link to the article (2013Q1 edition, then scroll down to "C-1 Springs and Spring Banding"): http://www.ncrstexas.org/talepipe.htm

Vinnie has asked Bill and I to combine information and pictures from two different articles (referenced above) for a future edition of The Restorer. We're working on now.

As Troy mentions, someone made a somewhat accurate reproduction of the clamp for a short period of time. At the moment, we're not aware of any currently available. Mike and others describe their success at carefully reusing some originals (painstaking but possible).
