    restoration tip for yourself

as i (1)age, (2) use defatting solvents(lacquer thinners), and(3) winter"s lower humidity ensues, my skin becomes dry and cracks, my poor pinkies develope fissures( deep cracks on the finger tips) and i'm not a happy camper. thought i'd pass along a tip to deal with the fissures. wash them puppies, let them dry, then apply one drop of Super Glu to each fissure. repeat daily and the fissure will heal in 1/10th the time it'd take otherwise. oh yeah , make sure ya let the Super Glu dry thoroughly before going to the urinal. mikie

Mike, I've had good success with using vitamin E oil and Neosporin on those "Grand Canyons". Those little bastards really hurt. I'll give the glue trick a try. Thanks.

            mike,

As I also aged and refused to get reading glasses I cut the tip off my RH middle finger whilst cutting a piece of sheetrock. The doctor in the ER glued it back on with you guessed it - isocyanurate (Super Glue)

Great tip. I'll try it. Believe it, or not, we get those things here in California even though it doesn't get all that cold or dry. I usually get one on my thumbs if I cut my thumbnail a little too short. I don't know why it has that effect, but it seems to happen pretty often, usually only in the winter. Whenever I get one, that tiny little thing hurts worse than a sprained ankle. I suppose it's got something to do with the proximity to the nerve endings.

This appears to have all of the earmarks of the Dr establishing the ground work for deducting everything he does with his cars under some criteria of "medical research" - next thing you know will be his claiming Dennis Clark as a dependent.......

Its amazing what one can learn here. It looks like a number of older guys posting at late hours. What do you have for memory for these posters so they can remember this wisdom?

The product "New Skin" has been around for umteen years which does the same thing plus it is medicated. Available at your local pharmacy.

As for saving the memories of us old farts, perhaps super glueing our mouths shut would help stop the leaking, and maybe plugging our ears and nostrils too would help. Don't you think? Leastwise, the one about the mouth is what my wife tells me about all the time. Says I talk way too much and is afraid to take me anywhere.

Ummm, does the thought of super-glue and having to get up during the night offers a possibility that's probably better NOT pursued!

I don't know, I think I would have asked to see that guy's diplomas...think of all those small vessels and nerve endings having to reunite, not to mention your natural juices screwing up the bond.

The worst of this condition, Mike, is when you get your hands wet enough for lacquer thinner to get up under your fingernails. It's almost as if the skin under your nails split on contact, causing wounds that heal slowly and are painful with every small hand movement.

Years ago, I began forcing myself to wear those orange chemical gloves (great for delicate restoration work ), and even those won't stand up to lacquer thinner long before they begin to soften and swell...after several uses, the tips of the glove fingers just fall off. There is no glove material that will stand up to lacquer thinner for long...which gives you a good idea of the strength and resilience of human skin.

I've tried the skin glue in a bottle with mixed results; getting that stuff wet causes it to come off quickly and you have to keep reapplying it. I'll try that super glue idea next time I have this problem.

Mike, the medical equivalent of super glue was used to close or stop bleeding of wounds in Nam in the field until the grunt could be taken to a field hospital. Gary....

Gold Bond has a creme advertised for cracked heels. When I go to bed I put this creme on my heels and split fingers and in the morning they are in good shape.
I also use Neosporin-the kind for pain relieve. It works well.
Meanwhile try a good humidifer. I have two going right now plus a very large pot of water on the stove as the gas forced air heat is very dry. April aire died long ago. JD
