    Diff to x-member mounting washer

The AIM shows lock washers under the 4 bolts that hold the Diff to x-member. My unmolested 73 has flat washer with no lock washer.

These flat washers look distorted into a cup shape. Did they change to flats because the x-member holes are too big and lock washers won't work?

    Which is correct?

    Steve,

The flat washers are correct, there is no need for the lock washer. I would put a drop of loctite on each but not the red stuff. You may want to remove these sometime in the future.

Make sure the four attaching bolts are grade eight..

Why? Were the original bolts grade 8?

I use gr 8 with lock washers. They hold tight and no one is going to see them anyway.

          Thanks,
Flats with blue loktite it is.
Dr R and Paragon sell these sets with splits. They must be following the AIM.

I suspect that the x-member holes are too big for splits to work properly. I'm gonna check this out.

The original bolts were GM-300M material grade (SAE grade 8).

Steve, I wondered the same. My mid '69 has flat washers too.
