    1966 Carburetor Question

What do you guys think about this carb on my 1966 300hp engine. It appears to be the correct carb a Holley 3367 stamp# 3884505-DA but the date code is 042(sorry i had to resize the pic and I don't think you can make out the date code) which would be April 2, 1970. Could this be correct, in Corvette by the #'s this is the right application but the date code should be 642. The author says these carbs were hand stamped and errors could occur, but my thinking is it is a replacement. My feeling is that they must have made these for other cars in the 70's. is this true? If it is a replacement how much do they ding you for the wrong date code?Let me know what you guys think. I also enclosed a copy of the intake manifold # 3872783 with casting date E116 (May 11, 1966). This appears to be correct. Sorry for some reason I can't download the pics. Thanks for any help in advance. Bob.

    Robert ,

It is most likley a "service replacement" carb from 1970 . The 3 digit date code give that away. They still make the 3367 carb today, or at least they did a few years ago, but now, it is an After Market Carb and has a four digit date code

I have heard there are people out there who can rebuild and restamp that carb , but others will have to tell you who they are . Also, others will have to answer how many points you would loose for an incorrect date on an otherwise correct Carb .

Here is a picture of what I am fairly certain is the correct Carb for my 66 and for yours as well.(give or take a month or so for yours)

      Bob:

The date 042 translates to 1970, April, 2nd week. They used weeks instead of days for the third digit.

An incorrect date code would likely get a 20% ORIGINALITY deduction. Other ORIGINALITY deductions could apply for configuration, finish, installation, and completeness. You could also get CONDITION deductions for any deterioration and/or aging. I believe the ORIGINALITY and CONDITION points for a 1966 carb are 40 pts and 20 pts, respectively.

A 20% hit on ORIGINALITY is 8 pts.

Depends on how bad you want/need points, but if the carb functioned correctly and didn't have problems, I would leave it and enjoy driving the car. I have seen 100% correct carbs that behaved badly.....you don't need this hassle.

Of course if you work hard enough or pay enough money, you can get a 100% correct carb that works as new.
