    71 Lt1

Just returned from looking at a 71 Nevada Silver LT1 coupe. The car had 32,000 original miles. There were several things I did not like about the car so I decided to pass on it. Just curious, is the serial number suppose to have a "L" in it? I had seen several LT1's advertised as having a "L" in the serial number representing an original LT1. Thanks for you help, the search continues, Joe DeLuca Member 37862

In '72 yes there was an L, but not in '70 or '71. '72 an up have a letter encoded into the VIN designating the engine type.

What specifically did you not like about the car?

Thanks, Mike. He had changed a lot of the suspension, put a fiberglass leaf spring in the back. It had side exhaust when he bought it, he changed it back to original exhaust. The back did not have the cut out for the exhaust. He had put the piece back but it needed to be painted. The car was painted in 1980 in lacquer. It had a big scratch on the bottom of the passenger side door, about 10 inches long and pretty deep. That is the car with the 4.11 rear. The car just did not hit me. I am looking for a car that when I see it I have to have it, this car did not do it for me. It was a nice car but I guess its not for me. Thanks again, Joe

Sounds like pretty minor 'faults' for a car that will be 39 years old soon. You might have to look long and hard to find better, but as you said if it doesn't grab you then best pass.

Mike, I am very impulsive, and it has gotten me in trouble before. I may be overly cautious now but I feel it's better to error on the sdie of caution. I have made mistakes in the past with cars, not taking my time to really look. I was one of those I'll take it guys. Only to get the car home and realize it needed more work than I thought. I am going to be 60 in December and would like to think I've finally learned from my mistakes!! Thanks again for your help, Joe

Do you recall the price? If so, would you share it?

He was asking 28,000. I think he was negotiable.(if that's how you spell it!)

Joe the rear spring is one of the easiest things to change on a C2&C3. I have done it without removing mufflers/tailpipes.
The 81 automatics and all 82 C3 Corvettes had composite rear springs installed at the factory to replace the heavier steel ones.

also the pannel in the back to cover up the exhaust holes is bolt on. it replaces the original rear valance pannel. easy to change. you cant tell by the vin if its a real lt1 but you can tell by several other ways.

You can tell by the VIN for 1972, but for 1970 or 1971 one will have to use more sophisticated methods to tell which engine the car was originally equipped with.
