C2 BB... Notch in the Inner Fender Panel to Change Plugs

Was there a GM service bulletin that recommend drilling or cutting a notch in the inner fender panels on C2 big block equipped cars to aid in changing spark plugs? Why I ask is because a friend of mine filled a notched hole in the passengers side inner fender panel on his '66 427/425 coupe that he is in the process of restoring.

    Thanks in advance.

Can't say for sure with respect to a bulletin, but I do recall my departed uncle (a Chevrolet dealer mechanic in the 1960s) mentioning this method for changing plugs on mid-years (and perhaps C3s).

James -- haven't re-read my service bulletin indexes from the latter C2 years, but I can't remember any such instruction.

Not to say that some mechanics wouldn't be tempted to create an access hole. But I would suspect that they would be found on C2 air cars, for cyl's # 2 and 4, under the compressor. Big blocks are MUCH easier to get to the plugs (well, maybe #6 less-so, with dipstick bracket), and any plug access holes would be at least a few inches up on the fender skirt, whereas the small blocks would be closer to the bottom of the skirt, to get a direct alignment to the plug.

With engine off-set to the passenger side, driver side access is never a problem.

My 64 convertible with 327/300 and factory air bought used in 1968 had two perfectly cut holes in the passenger fenderwell I used to change the two sparkplugs under the compressor.

I'm not aware of any bulletins on this. Probably the handywork of Bubba. BB plugs are alot easier to change from down under.

I'm thinking there was an article in the Restorer a few months back. Someone may remember the issue.
