    1967 427/435 Cam and Lifters

I am restoring my 67 435 hp Conv. I am about to take the engine to the local engine shop. I am going to have to buy a new Cam and Lifter Kit.
Does anyone have any experience with this rebuild and what Cam and Lifter kit would you recommend. I would like to stay as close, in all aspects, to the original mechanical lifter items I have now, without having to buy all NOS parts. Thanks Jeff

With Crane out of business for the time being, I'd say that Comp Cams or Federal-Mogul are going to be your best bet, if not only choices.

The Comp Cams camshaft part number is 11-106-3. The lifters are Comp Cams #800-16 (best) or 813-16.

Make sure you use Royal Purple break-in oil with ZDDP. I have seen two 435 Crane Cams wiped within minutes, because of improper break-in. Use Comps Cams assembly lube also. The problem was the Crane lifters were soft and wiped the cam. When I spoke to Comp they said they had no trouble as long as you use oil with high amounts of ZDDP. The Comp Cam worked fine.

Comp Cams now has their own break in oil. Use it with Comp Cams camshaft, lifters and assembly lube and I don't see how they'll have any excuses if there are cam problems. I don't think there will be such problems, though.

There was a thread about this same subject in the last week, and the Federal Mogul/Speed Pro part numbers were listed, which you can buy at NAPA.

Comp Cams is my absolute LAST CHOICE for buying camshafts and valvetrain parts. If any other vendor has what is needed...

Use CJ-4 or CI-4 oil and a bottle of GM EOS for break-in. Change the filter, only, after the first one-half to two hours of engine operation.

Change the EOS laced oil at 1000-1500 miles along with the filter, then continue to use CJ-4 or CI-4 after that, and there is no need for any additional supplements.

                Jeff,

Duke is cautioning you to avoid Comp Cams because they don't Parkerize their cams. Check out this thread:

My 66 L-72 (427/425) was recently rebuilt. Right now it has the Comp Cams camshaft that Joe Lucia mentioned. But I plan to swap it out with the Federal Mogul part in this thread:

Duke and Joe, The KC165R Kit from Napa is the one I should go with for my 435 car? Just making sure I have the correct kit you recommended. Thanks for the info. Did not realize the Comps were not parkerized. Jef

I believe that's the part number. Look is up at www.napaonline.com including CS165R and AT992

                          Jeff,

I would think the same cam would be used for the 66 L-72 and the 67 L-71. I tried to confirm it for you on the web sites for NAPA and Summit Racing, without any luck. I would suggest calling your local NAPA parts counter. Perhaps Joe Lucia could tell us which engines the Federal-Mogul CS-165R would apply to.

                            Joe -

The '66 cam needs a groove in the rear journal, and the '67 cam doesn't.

                              John,

That's true. But the Federal Mogul cam does not have the groove. So for 67 you're good to go. For 65-66 you need to grind the groove.
