    72 454 Carb

My 72 454 with Auto trans, came to me with a Holley with dual float chambers and dual accelerator pumps. I've been told this is a famous "Holley double pumper", that hot rodders prize.

I beleive I've seen this type of Holley on LT-1's but not on big blocks.

Isn't my car supposed to have a Quadrajet?

I have been told that a Quadrajet 7042208 is correct for the car, is this true?

    Thanks

    I show Qjet #7042216 for a 72 454 Corvette with auto.

I think 7042208 is for a light truck.

        Re: 72 454 Carb

I believe you would be a lot better off with the original carb looking for a 7042216 for a Corvette '72 with 454, at least according to the '72 Service manual, and a couple of other references.

The last Shark era BB with a Holley vs. QJet carb was the LS-6 from 1971...

Dennis, I have been looking for a 7042216 for my car since I bought it. Found one at Carlisle this year but opted out, $1500 and didn't have the correct date.

For what it's worth the carb on my car is a 7042220, which I believe is the service replacement, I'm sure some will chime in. It seems to run fine with it and I have seen them on E-bay for little money compared to the correct one. Good luck!

7042220 is for a '72 Camaro, Chevelle, El Camino, or Monte Carlo with a 402/454 and automatic transmission

And there are vendors that can take care of the number/date deficiencies.

                    Re: 72 454 Carb

Similar to starters or alternators, once a carb has gone through a recyclers and re-builders shop, the original numbers mean very little.

I am aware that the 7042220 was used on those engines. Does anyone know if that carburator would have been used as a service replacement under warranty or otherwise? Is it calibrated the same as the 7042216? Just curious. Thanks!!

there is not a single part in these 2 carbs that has a different part number

Dennis LT-1's did leave the factory with a Holley carburator, but it was not a "Holley double pumper".
If you have the original intake on your 72 454 which left the factory with a QJet, a previous owner has done what other owners have done to replace the QJet with a Holley Spreadbore "double pumper" which is a direct bolt on replacement without changing the orginal intake manifold.
I replaced my leaking QJets on my 68 327/350 and 70 350/300 in 1974. I opted for the Holley 650 "6210 List number" spreadbore double pumpers.
Really like the complete positive control on when the secondarys open with the Holley double pumpers.
