Well one explanation, and this is just a gut feeling but, in that era maybe someone seeking the creature comfort of air would seem to be more inclined to drive their car responsibly rather than someone looking for every HP edge and much more likely to drive it in the ground. That's one reason I think the existing 70's are a much smaller percentage of the number original built than most would think. It was very raw and more appealing at the time to those that drive hard. Difficult to keep em out of the junk yards if they're going to the track or getting wrapped around telephone poles.
