    1957 gas door bumper screws.

What is the correct screw used to hold the gas door rubber bumpers on with? What is the finish?
I found a bag which I marked when I took the car apart and it had 2 clutch head screws in it. Are they correct. Early car #809.

Bruce, would expect to see #6 flat head phillips in '57. Very early '57 might have had clutch same as '56 did. Gary....

Bruce, when I got my '57 way back when it had original fasteners and bumpers. They were as Gary said, #6 flat head phillips. The car was assembled mid-December, '56.

I haven't seen every '56 and '57 ever built, but those I've restored and known originals I've observed had oval-head bright phillips screws attaching the door bumpers.

The #431766 screw shown in the A.I.M. illustration (section E, sheet 3.00) shows very clearly as an oval-head phillips screw (that sheet was released 9/55 and shows no changes).

I am a bit confused, and alot ignorant. Does anyone have a comparison picture of the flat head and the oval head?

              Thanks Guys!

Steve, as usual Mr. Hinckley is correct. Always thought they were flat. Pulled out my originals and they're slightly, I mean very slightly tapered on the edges when you hold a straight edge across the head. That makes them oval head. And one did show a trace of chrome on the shank. Have found clutch heads screws in '56's. Have never found the GM fastener description for the gas door bumper screw part no. 431766. Gary....

Gary, told you I was confused--- For some unknown reason I was thinking oval looking down on it. I checked mine and they are oval looking at the side view.

                  Thanks John and Gary!
