Interesting Find

Hi all,

I know we all like to see the neat old things well here's one for you. I removed my old heater core today from my 64 which I suspected was bad and noticed across the top was someone's name written in green crayon. Appears to read " Pauls Atlaud". Really neat. There was also a old fork lodged near the inside flap door.Might have been there since day one. Don't see how it could have gotten there otherwise. Anyway just something neat to see.

Are you going to have the original repaired? Make sure the radiator shop pressure test before you install.

I have heard of others installing new cores only to find a leak on a replacement part..

I didn't realize these could be recored. If it's possible I would rather reuse. I will look into it.

Hi,

As some of you may know I have owned my 66 Roaster for 40 years. I am restoring it myself for my 7,000 mile road trip next summer and I pulled up the old carpets. Guest what I found. A bunch of coins. I have attached a photo of three of them.

2 quarters 1965 and 1967

1 dime 1965 or 1966 hard to tell as I have not cleaned them.

I bought the car from a pilot going to Nam in 1969. They have been in the car for 43 years. The other photo is of his wings that are still on my glove box door.

Jack, that is way to cool. Any idea if the pilot is still alive? Those wings might be 10Kt or better. Great bit of history with the car.

I always enjoy some of the secrets hidden in these old cars. Just adds to the fun. Neat find. Bet the guy who wrote that on the core never thought anyone would see it !!

The first time I dropped the gas tank on my 1966 (Car 19,737), I found a 8 1/2" X 11' piece of paper stuck to the tank on the top right hand side of the filler neck. The paper was folded a couple of times and had a yellow or lite brown tint maybe from gas fumes. When I unfolded the paper I could not see any writting on it. I don't think my car is that late in production that this piece of paper could have been a test try for a tank sticker. Yes I know tank stickers were in 1967. Anyone else around my VIN. find this type of paper.

Hate to rain on the parade, butr my guess is that it has been out to be repaired before. Radiator shop made that comment on tank. When we had the radiator shop, we always wrote the owners name on tanks

Sorry Dick but i know all three owners and none of them are named Pauls or anywhere close ( Gene, Ron and Henry). Any other guesses? It does not appear to have ever been out.

Had mine re-cored in my '65 air car back about 1981. They used the same end caps (stamped Harrison 64 H, but they soldered over the date stamp). Never leaked so far.

But since the subject of this thread is "interesting finds", let me show you what I found under the carpet of a '65 coupe that I bought back in Feb of '75. Two tickets (sequential VIN numbers ) to a drive-in in Norton, Vermont, planted directly on the US side of the Canadian (Quebec border).

A bit of social history: up to the '60s and into the early '70s, in the province of Quebec, the Roman Catholic church laid down the law to politicians and peons alike. One of the rules was that there shall be no drive-in cinemas in the province (might lead to heavy petting, and worse). So the US border towns built these dens of iniquity to satisfy the pent-up demand.

On the pic, you can see the city of Granby (upper left of ticket), which is where the car was sold new (#12,555, L79, tele, 4.11's). You can see Norton VT lower right.

You can bet you will always find a coin in the car ! I found a 1965 coin in my 1965 Mustang, jammed in the air conditioners front trim to stop it vibrating. After I took it out it vibrated like hell so guess what I did. I shoved the exact coin back in there and it hasn't vibrated since ! Stewy

My first car was a76 Pontiac Grand Prix. I bought it in 1979. Soon after ,my parents divorced, my Dad's business failed and money was real tight. The engine had a bad habit of causing one push-rod to bend and the engine would mis-fire. I finally realized that the guide was broken, while I waited for a new guide to be delivered I took a Budweiser beer can, peeled it open, folded it over itself a few times to make it real stiff and drilled 2 holes in it, one to attach it to a threaded hole in the head, the other was the new guide in which the push=rod travelled. The car ran fine for a few days, so when I got the valve guide I threw it into my toolbox intending to replace my "Bud" guide. Well I never did, the Beer can guide worked great for another 100,000 miles....somewhere, if the car is still around, and it's owner decides to restore the engine, He will be surprised to find this treasure! A symbol of tough times and what we do to get by!!
