I'm not to concerned if I see Corvettes because I will be coming back from Bowling Green Kentucky Corvette Museum. Thanks everyone for your responses it's great. I will be traveling back by car from NY to Chicago then down the mother road 66 to LA. If anyone knows of petrol head stuff I can see along the way I would really appreciate it. Stewy

      Hi Stewart:

Why not take a side trip to Vegas? Not far out of your way and you can visit Shelby. They have some cars there and you can take a tour.

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum

I am sure there is no shortage of excellent venues across the states to view some outstanding examples of the Automobile. Noting that you are going from NY to Chicago, you may want to consider the real MOTOR CITY. Yea, I know that Detroit is an armpit of a town these days, but there is still no shortage of many excellent places in the vicinity to check out some great stuff. The Gilmore Museum in the Kalamazoo area is a MUST for car lovers who have never been there. Features some real automobile nostalgia in a beautiful setting, with old time gas station, working diner and a really great setting of restored and rebuilt barns from across the country. Seems to me it sits on well over 100 acres and is truly one of the best places I have ever been, and they have everything from the early Peirce-Arrows, a genuine Tucker, as well as many many other antique and classics, from the beginning to the muscle cars. You can easily spend a whole day there. There is also one of the best (talk about prejudice) NCRS chapters (Michigan) in the country where I am sure you might find someone who could get you in to see the GM Heritage Center, and maybe a couple of other local "collections" if everything worked out right.
        Just some ideas......

          Stu,
If you decide to go to Detroit, as you head west from there, you will pass close to Auburn, Indiana. Just a few miles south of I-80 on I-69 (hard to forget that one ). There is usually one or two Corvettes, but the museum is in the factory showroom of the Auburn - Cord - Dusenberg Company. When you walk in the front door it looks like a Dusenberg dealer showroom from the 1920s. There has to be 20 or 30 Million dollars worth of cars sitting there -- even at today's devalued dollars. There are more cars on display on both floors of the factory building.

Dating back to 1930, our historic museum is filled with three levels of car exhibits and automotive themed galleries. Check out this dream destination for all car lovers!
          Terry

I may be wrong but I thought the NHRA Museum mentioned a couple of times above was closing.

Auburn and the ACD Museum are a great suggestion since you are going to be in the midwest. There has been a real 427 Cobra on permanent display on the 2nd floor for years there. The museum in back of the ACD museum is National Automotive and Truck Museum of the United States. Lots of American muscle and trucks in there. Don't miss it. Then you travel out of town south a couple of miles to the Kruse Auction complex and you can go to the Kruse Automotive and Carraige Museum and the Kruse WWII Victory Museum. It's the largest collection of WWII vehicles, planes armored vehicles and you name it form every army involved in the European theater of operations. Also on the Kruse grounds is the newly dedicated Ford V8 Club of America museum and the Andy Granitelli Hall of Fame that is set to open this fall if you like Indy car stuff.

< There was only one Vette there when I went last spring, a C1 racer type (not my cup of tea), but many other very rare and interesting cars.

Any idea which one? Definitely MY cup of tea!

Stewy, While not on your proposed path, I was impressed with the American Motorcyle Associations( A.M.A) museum in Colombus Ohio, While working races there each year I saw the 100 anniverary of the following Motorcycles( a different one each year) Indian, Harley, Triumph, BSA. When they do that they have only that make. Sometimes it was a mix of antique bikes. Also a large collection of Hendersons (4 cylinders) and lots of paper work( example 4x8 sheets of steel for .02 cents). Also just down the road the Air Force Museum. They have every prototype aircraft ever made including the only B-70 in exsistance. The Kruse World War II vechile museum was one of my top 5 ( Garlits Museum, NHRA, Air Force, Ford, WW II) Just my opinion. Corvette Museum the same every time. I have been 4 times. Factory tour was great. ( I worked Bowling Green Hot Rod Reunion ). Again just my opinion.Dale

                      Stewy,

Are you into motorcycles at all? You might want to check out the Moto Museum in St. Louis. They have over 100 mostly European cycles on display. I think it's purty cool. Here's a link:

If you visit the museum you might as well have lunch at the Triumph Grill next door. The food is very good, the decor is motorcycle inspired. After that I would recommend a trip to Ted Drewe's for some frozen custard. It's on Route 66.

When will you be here? I would like to meet you if possible.

                      Joe

Joe it's still a while about 8 months away. It will take me that long to work out the route I'll be using to see everything. But I'm really fanging to get over there and start rubber necking. Stewy

Has anyone been to Shelby Automobiles in Las Vegas. Is the factory in the same spot I believe they have tours there but cannot find an address for the factory ? Stewy

Go here for the place in Las Vegas: http://cam1.teamshelby.com/

This is probably better for "real" cars although I believe Shelby may have CSX2000 (the first Cobra) at his place in Las Vegas: http://shelbyamericancollection.org/ (Open only on Saturdays)

Again, the best place to see some Shelby American products will be May 6-8, 2010 at SAAC-35 to be held at Willow Springs Raceway in California. It will be way better than a museum. www.saac.com

I was there few years ago when they were still building the Series 1. They gave a very informative tour of the museum and assembly area. All those aluminum Cobra bodies for the continuation cars in racks against the one wall was amazing. As a bonus Carroll was there that day to meet with several people who were taking delivery of their Series 1 cars so I got to meet him and get my Shelby hat signed.

It's all in the same building out beside the speedway.
