Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
Stewart:
I went there in July (I'm from NY) and thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I made a point of going. The museum is not as big as you might think. I spent about two hours on a Sunday, which can be a difficult day to sightsee. I think it is well worth the trip.
Per their site (see below), they are now running an exhibit on So Cal Speed shops and California car design.
You can get more info at www.petersen.org.

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
I've been there many times. I have a friend that lives in an area of Beverly Hills which is just about within walking distance of the museum. So, when I go to the LA area and visit him, we sometimes go over there.
The museum has ever-changing exhibits. So, no matter when you go there's always something new.
Another great automotive museum, but in northern California, is the Blackhawk Museum. It's one of the few places one can see a Bugatti Royale (if it's not on loan to another museum). We had my retirement dinner party at the Blackhawk Museum. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
Yes, it's a must see.
It doesn't have that many cars, but the way they're displayed makes them enjoyable to a non-car person, like my wife.
NHRA museum is on my list for my next trip.____________________

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
I want to see a real 427 Cobra while I'm in the states, would any of the Auto museums have one ? Corvettes are real but over here I have probably seen 2000 replica Cobras and never ever seen a real one ! Stewy- Top

When will you be visiting? The Shelby American Automobile Club Convention will be at Willow Springs (California) in May 2010. No problems seeing a few 427 Cobras there.- Top

Stewy,
I went in late June and didn't particularly enjoy it. There was some construction and display setup going on at the time, but still I expected a lot more from a museum of such renoun. And I didn't see even one 'vette (or any other muscle era car for that matter) in any of the displays. Some interesting antique, one off and concept cars for sure, but not my taste. There was one nice Bugatti there, but it was roped off AND behind glass in a 40's-50's style dealership display. You could hardly see the car.- Top

Yes, it is a great museum and worth the time. There was only one Vette there when I went last spring, a C1 racer type (not my cup of tea), but many other very rare and interesting cars.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
I enjoyed my first visit several years ago, but if you're looking for Corvettes, you'll be disappointed. I think it's a good place to see if you're in LA, but not necessarily worth a special trip to LA just for the museum. Something that I find much more enjoyable when visiting my son in LA is driving down to Huntington Beach early Saturday morning and visiting Adams Donut Shop. There's a parking lot full of hot rods, muscle cars, and usually several vettes. The cars start leaving around 8:00 or 8:30, so you need to get there early. You can google Adams Donut Shop and find particulars.- Top

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
Stewart,
If you want to see, hear and watch drive a couple of real 427 Competition Cobra's when your in LA stop over at "Early Rodder" in at the AMC Theaters in La Canada on Saturday mornings, or Friday nights at Bob's Big Boy on Riverside in Toluca lake. There is a gentlemen who has two original Competition Cobra's, one blue, one red that have racing history and are perfect. He drives them to both events regulary. There is also a few 289's that come out, and a group of XK120's, a C type, along with a host of other cars, including Corvettes!
If your down in Orange County, Saturday morning is "Coffee and donuts" in Irving. There are hundreds of cars there every Saturday or all description including original Cobra's.
Not that both of these Saturday morning events start early around 6AM and are over by 8:30.
Enjoy!- Top

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
The last time I was at the California Auto Museum in Sacramento (formerly Towe Auto Museum), they had an original 427 Cobra. I believe it is part of their permanent collection, but you might want to check first if you were to consider going there. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Has Anyone Been To Peterson Auto Museum
1. Yes, a trip to the Peterson is worthwhile. Take you about 2 hours to go through it. There's a parking garage behind it. I seem to remeber parking was $10.
2. Look at the Nethercutt too.
3. The #1-not-to-be-missed while in LA is the Donut Derelicts on Adams in Huntington Beach on early Saturday morning. By "early" I mean dawn. Really. It's over at 9 AM.
4. There used to be a show in Crystal Cove on Saturday morning. Not so early. In fact, you could leave Donut Derelicts and catch the Crystal Cove one. Crystal Cove is down by Newport Beach. I understand it's now moved to the Ford Premium group HQ near Newport Beach. As you can probably tell, I'm not too sure of the location. You'll have to do some Internet searching. I am sure that it's worthwhile because I went once when it was down in Crystal Cove.
5. See if the Pomona swap meet will be on when you're there.
6. There's also a well regarded cruise night at a drive-in hamburger place in either Glendale or Burbank. Thursday or Friday night. Might be a Big Bob's. If you ask or research, you'll find it. It's that well known.- Top
