How do you like these anodes, Jack

Here's 4 pounds of pure zinc being used in an older Caswell 3 gallon setup:

Just got tired of playing around with those thin plates. These blocks are used for cathodic protection for ships hulls, so I got a few and drilled holes in them for stainless steel all-thread. They hang nicely on the side of the tank.

Then with a tablespoon per gallon of Zinc Brightener, things just come out real bright zinc:

And the yellow dichromate takes just nice in 20 seconds:

Here's a few carburetor parts I was doing in the meantime, while I was working on the carb:

The copper wire on the right is how the parts come out of the plating tank.

Just having fun. Joe C, I'm sitting in my garage with that certain type of grin on my face.

Very nice work. Any chance of writing a tutorial for those that want to try this at home?

    Thanks,Jim

And, before I found my source for cad, we used to 'scrounge' it from local mom/pop HVAC shops. Both cad and zinc were used as sacrificial anodes in old hot water heating systems to thwart the interal rot of cast iron radiators.

But, my take was the purity of those anodes was WAY off when compared to the metal supplied/sold to commercial platers for actual cad/zinc plating production...

        Jack,

Actually the ones I got are 99.9% pure zinc, and they work just great. Can't beat that for $1.99 a pound.

That's about as good as it gets in terms of purity! You done GOOD finding that source for zinc... It's a LOT more cost effective than buying from the 'traditional' sources (Caswell, Etc.).
