    Control arm tool?

I have a 68 Corvette and I need to replace the control arm bushings. The service manual shows two GM tools (upper: 5-7052-2 and lower: J 7052-1) that are used to keep from deforming the upper and lower control arms when pressing in a bushing. I plan on making the tools by cutting a 1.75 exhaust pipe in half. The problem is I don't know what lenght to make the tools. Can anyone with help out? The inside area of the control arms isn't completely flat. I really don't want to end up making scrap while trying to figure out the lenght.

    Thanks......

John, I didn't even know there was such an animal. I usally just grease and go in an arbor press. However, I think if you just measure the span between sides when the shaft and old bushings are out, you would be close enough to prevent bending the control arm.

I'm in the middle of doing my now and I may just make a pair of tools myself.

I used water pipe for changing the control arm bushings on my Chevelles. I measured the distance between the bushing supports and cut the pipe to fit. That worked fine. You only have to prevent gross movement of the control arm ears. If they move a little just get a BFH and pound to fit. Corvettes are no less delicate than Chevelles.

        Thanks for the two replies.

I'll have to measure as close as possible then make the tool.
