Re: 67 Clamp & Rivet Help

Got the tool and rivets and have been practicing on some spare pieces of metal. The tool I have sets the rivet fine but at the end cuts off the stem in the center of the rivet. This is not how the rivets on the car look. They have nothing in the hole in the middle. Am I doing something wrong?

      Kirk -

Part of the mandrel stays in the tubular portion of a pop-rivet when the rivet seats and the mandrel breaks off. Photo below shows an original rivet for that clip on the driver's side of my '67.

How much of the end of the mandrel shows and how deep it is inside the hole depends on the design grip length of the rivet vs. the thickness of the parts it's joining; I wouldn't be concerned about it.

Why on so many original 67 I have looked at over the years including my dads 67 use a roseit style rivet like used on vin tags.

The guy in the Body Shop who installed the clip probably ran out of rivets and grabbed a bunch of them from the VIN plate operation at the beginning of the Hard Trim Line. The rosette version of the rivet wasn't strictly controlled as a VIN plate-only part back then, although it was supposed to have been. Production guys are very resourceful when the need arises.
