    70 Radiator Support

Can anyone help with a description or pics of the bolt/washer arrangement of the upper radiator brackets that bolt directly to the support? I know the brackets are attached with 2 bolts each, but am not sure of the washer/star washer/lock washer sequence. The support is for a copper radiator. Any help is appreciated. Tx.

The washer sequence is shown in the 70 AIM, UPC LS5, Sheet B4.

All the bolts have star washers except for the upper bolt on the passenger side bracket which inexplicably has a large fender type flat washer and a cut lock washer. This arrangement is the same for small blocks with C60 and copper/brass radiator.

A search of the archives may turn up a discussion of this feature many years ago, but I wouldn't bet on it. As I recall, Ron Goduti was the man with the definitive answer. I had noted this washer difference during disassembly, but wasn't sure it was original or remember which bolt was configured differently.

Joe, the aim shows star lock washers, but my 72 C60 car has big star washers on the outboard and flat washers on the inboard all appear to be original to the car and appear to be zinc plated.this may vary from 70.

I've never figured out the reason for the split-lockwasher at the one position, but I think I know the reason for the flatwasher. Without it, the radiator support is easily distorted when the bolt is torqued to spec. In fact, they should have used a flatwasher at ALL positions.

Maybe they discovered that by 1972 and that's why Edward's car has them at all positions even though the AIM doesn't call for it.

I used flat washers at ALL positions. In fact, they are more necessary at the positions that use star washers than they are at the position that uses the split lockwasher. Using the star washers in this application without flat washers was a VERY "hokey" sort of design.

Tx for the replys. I did reference the AIM, but it just looked odd with the arrangement presented. As I'm going for points at the upcoming Jenkintown meet I'll install per the AIM directions. We'll see what happens.

Ron, the flat washers were 5/16 but the washer head size was a little bigger than the normal ones .

Could someone tell me what headmarks were on these bolts and are the lengths all the same or are they different? Also what finish on the bolts?
                  Thanks

                    Sheldon,
My 72 C-60 car has a WB on the outboard bolts they were shorter bolts, And the inboard bolts where RSC and were the longer bolts.I would say the shorter bolts were about one in. and the longer inboard bolts were about 11/2 in. long. there were zinc plated as was the washers including the star washer.

                            Hmmm.

Both short and long bolts are RSC on my 70. I am curious about the washer size too.

Go ahead and laugh, but I thought they should all have the star washer so I went and found one. Now I have no idea where the flat and lock washer could be.

                            Oh well Bill
