I just picked up a used front bumper core that I am dropping off to have it re-chromed. On my 1970 bumper there are two brackets welded to accept the bumper guards. On this front bumper the brackets are L shaped facing the back of the car. Is this off a different year? Will it fit a 1970? The bolt hole seem to line up. Should I grind off or cut these L brackets before I have the bumper re-chromed?

Re: 1970 Front Bumper
HI Les
68 and 69's I know for sure only have the single bend. I don't know if 70's have it but I know my 71 has the L shape and another small angled bend. Some people have cut off the extra bend and mounted on the 68 and 69's but when judging I have noticed judges deduct for the wrong front bumper. 68 69 and possibly the 70 is a one year only single bend. Also it is wider than the 71 to 72. So if yours is supposed to be the single bend then try and find an original one.
I know for GM NOS replacement after 72 most or all of the front bumpers has the extra bend. I have only seen 1 NOS 68 69 front bumper sold for 1200.00 Then again 68's has an early version too so you don't have to worry about that.
Hope this helps.- Top

There were 3 different front bumpers over the 68-72 period. GM #3930410 was used for 1968-69. This is the bumper with the "L" shaped brackets.
The second was GM #3964100. If it was ever used, at all, this bumper was used for early 1970. However, I don't think that this bumper ever made it to PRODUCTION. It was NEVER available in SERVICE, that's for sure. I have no idea what the configuration of this bumper was.
The third bumper was GM #3974008. This is the bumper with the "Z" shaped brackets. It was used for 1970-72, excepting those 70's that MAY have received the above-referenced.
The GM #3974008 will SERVICE all 1968-69 Corvettes. Whether, or not, there is any problem with installing a 68-69 bumper on a 1970-72, I do not know.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1970 Front Bumper
I could go look at my 1970, but I need to get a better idea of what to look for. It is an early car (end of January) so it mey not tell us anythign anyway. A picture would help me better understand what to look for.Terry- Top

Re: 1970 Front Bumper
Les, better take a close look before you spend your money getting it plated. Check your 70 AIM, UPC 11/13 Sheet A6...View A shows the detail for the bracket which supports the inboard upper corner of the 70-72 front grilles. The 70-72 bumper may work for 68-69 because there are two set of holes in the "Z" brackets...the upper holes in the vertical portion of the "Z" are where the bumper guards attach (UPC 14 Sheet A3).- Top

Terry and Les
Here is some pics. Left is the 68 69 and or 70? and the right is 71 72
Notice the width of the 68/9 is wider and at the end there is a 1/2 inch shaved edge. But actually not shaved. It is stamped steel configuration then welded and then chromed.
If you cut the end even clean off a 71 71 it will still not be wide enough thus also the so called shaved edges it is actually a clean die stamp cut. Any effort in grinding it clean will still leave marks the judges can see.
Terry if you look on you car I would like to know my self what is the correct bumper for a 70.
Hope this helps.

Re: 1970 Front Bumper
The 'Z' shaped attachment to the front bumpers are for '70 to '72 style cars that use a metal bracket to connect the front cast metal grilles to the bumperettes as well as the front bumper.
The 'L' shaped attachement to the front bumpers are for '68, '69 style cars only. A '70 to '72 front bumper with proper brackets will fit on a '69 model car, however the front bumperettes will not align properly on the underside of the bumper or the lower front fiberglass valance properly without a quarter inch shim because of that 'Z' shaped attachment in lieu of the 'L' proper style attachment.- Top
