    Ignition coil orientation

So, one of the things I got dinged for in my first chapter judging was that the judge couldn't see the part number on the coil. I knew it was the original coil for the car, but he was right. The number wasn't visible.

It was exactly behind the bracket.

So, I tried pulling it up so it was visible, but now I can't get the ignition shielding down onto the car, nor close the hood without hitting the coil.

So, I tried pushing the coil all the way down in the bracket, and you can't see the number.

So, I thought I'd just take a picture of it, and when the judges say they can't see the number, I'd just show the picture.

Do you think that will work? IF NOT, what the heck should I do?

By the way, here is a picture of my coil pulled up so you can see the correct 207 part number for 67 327/350 TI.

    Chris,
Do you recall how many Originality points were deducted?
    Best regards,

Use caution changing the orientation of the coil. If the coil connectors make contact with the shielding you will see smoke and melt some wires and a fire is possible. Don't ask how I found this out.

        Best regards,
I don't have my sheets yet, since the meet was only last weekend. I think it was only 1 point.

I reinstalled the coil all the way down on the bracket. I think this is where it was before I pulled it out.

Any other thoughts? This can't be a new issue.....

Chris -- unfortunately, you lucked upon a mechanical judging team with little sympathy . In the '65 TIM&JG, at least it says "responsibility of the owner to position the DISTRIBUTOR ID band in a manner that facilitates judging". No such comment given for the ignition coils, and one of the reasons is that the wiring might have to be contorted beyond a safe alignment, as mentioned by Bob R.

The "207" is one of the very few coils (even among non-T.I. coils; the 238 is another non-TI coil) that has the embossed number low on the can. Most other K66 coils are numbered high and therefore on the opposite side of the Delco Remy paper-backed red/silver sticker. The '207's are always hard to to read in-place, regardless of orientation. The best you can hope for is if the number happens to be opposite the gap in the coil clamp [you might see 2 out of 3 digits].

Example of my "210" below -- a mirror shot like yours to show both sides (used for '65 L78's and some early L36 '66 BB K66 cars]. I also have an original (old) 207 and two NOS 207's that I bought at a swap meet in Vermont in the early '90s, as well as numerous pics that demonstrate the low emboss on the '207s'.

Bottom line --- next to impossible to verify all 3 digits on a '207' when correctly mounted in the coil bracket.

          .

Ok, so do you think on the judging field that my picture will be enough to get my points back?

No, I think your odds are good that you'll get a judge that's more conversant with how such things should be judged.
