      Re: 65 clock rebuild?

Does anybody know of a place to get replacement gears that I could install myself? My clock face, bezel and glass is perfect as is the case. The issue is that one spindel in the back has broken and cannot be repaired easily.

I'm in a time crunch here (Hershey is NEXT SATURDAY) and I need to do something. I suppose I could grab a quartz movement and throw it on, but I suppose that would kill me for points.

Unless somebody makes a quartz replacement that does not have that intermittent tick movement???

        Tony,

I am sure you could pick up an original clock on J-row at Carlilse tomorrow.

          Re: 65 clock rebuild?

Yeah Tom, I went over to Carlisle yesterday. There were a number of nicely restored clocks for around 400-450 and some that worked, but needed restored going for about 275-300.

My bezel, face, hands, etc are just about perfect, so all I really need are the rear gears. I'd hate to destroy a restorable clock just to get the guts out of it, (especially for 300 smackers).

I saw an ad where they have a quartz movement that does NOT have the tick tick movement like most of those clocks....meaning it has a smooth rotation like "real" clocks. I wonder if that would do. I know you get killed on points for the quartz intermittent movement.

            Anthony -

Original midyear electro-mechanical clocks have an audible tick, with incremental needle movement; quartz movements don't tick, and have smooth needle movement.

Whoa! Thanks sir. You have saved me from what have been a dumb mistake.

I'll stick with getting either a repair part or shipping the clock to a professional.

              Thanks.

I just had my original clock restored by The Clock Works www.clockwks.com for a total of $78 including shipping back to me and a replacement bezel.

                    Re: 65 clock rebuild?

Here is what I actually did for my 66:

I went on eBay and found a movement and won the bid. It came in perfect condition. I was running out of time, so I had my local jeweler install it while I was working a few other issues. It worked flawlessly.

So for $45, some shipping and a ride in the Vette for my jeweler, I have a clock that works for the first time in like forever!

The eBay seller goes by gaugetweeker and I was very pleased with the quick shipping in addtion to the brand new condition of the movement.

By the way, I think that helped the car win its Senior Award at the AACA Fall Meet in Hershey this past Saturday.

I'm pretty sure that a quartz movement clock will get a total deduct, which is 25 points. PT

Follow up on the guy who sent me the clock movement. His name is John and does business at www.redlineg.com. He's from Humboldt Texas. Phone is 731-571-0766 and his email is Redlinec@bellsouth.net.

Seems to be a straight up guy and could be a good resource for folks who have nice clock faces and bezels but just need the movement.

He may do total restos as well, but I didn't even ask.

That's Humboldt Tennessee and he actually lives in Jackson, Tennessee right next door to Roger Reed (Corvette Clocks by Roger). He was trained by Roger and is now running "Redline".

                          Small world isn't it?

You are correct, Tennessee, not Texas. One of these days I have to learn how to read my own writing.

                            Sorry about that.

I did finally go to his website and it looks like he does the full range of services.
