    65 clock rebuild?

This is my first post . Hope it turns out ok. My original clock hasen't worked in years. I recently obtained a nos 65 impala clock. My question is. Has anyone ever attempted removing the internal clock assy from a 65 impala housing and put it into a midyear clock housing by swaping the face and the clock hands from the midyear? I have not dismantaled either clock yet.I plan to try this.but was wondering if any one ever attempted this sucessfuly. Dennis Consalvo(15632)

    Dennis,

There is a fellow here in Joppa Md. that can repair your clock, his name is Rick Stottler (sp)? The points in the old clock may just need to be cleaned for the movement to work again.

You may be able to sell the Impala clock and pay for the repairs. I don't fault you for wanting to do it yourself but $$ if you damage that clock.

Tim, Do you happen to have his phone number handy? I had all my gauges restored for my 60 recently except for the clock which I purchased a repop digital. I thought the restoration price I was quoted was too high on the clock. As I would prefer to stay with original I am still seeking another quote.
      Thanks,

Joe Ray here is very good on clocks. I understand he is quit reasonable also.

            Valeria:
Have you opened up the back of the clock to determine why your clock doesn't work? Most of the time they just need a good cleaning and oiling to get going. I have done this many times on C-3 clocks that ran for years. There was an article in the Restorer by Ron Dembrowski and James Dommer (Winter 1989) on repairing a C-2 clock. If you want to follow this path I can scan the article and send it to you via email.

Please send me the article. I enjoy working and tinkering on watches but I did not want to damage this valuable and irreplaceable piece. I would like to take a shot at it first. The bezel is rusted and the stem is missing. These will have to be sent out to be repaired.

Clockworks does a nice job for $50. they do not restore the case though.

Let me add my name to the list of just trying to clean it first, file the points, secondly and then see if it works. My 72 LT1 had a non-working clock on an otherwised pristine 32000 mile car. I took the clock out, took the face off and hands off and sprayed the entire movement with electrical contact cleaner. Gobs of brown/gray "stuff" flowed out. After air drying, I gently filed the points, put a single drop of lightweight clock oil on the movement shaft and hooked it up. Ten years later and it still runs.

                    Re: 65 clock rebuild?

FYI, C2 clocks are a bit different than C3 units... The disassembly process and guts and not the same. But, the key factors that contribute to 'death' are...

                    (1) Long periods of disuse cause lube on mainspring, gears, and cogs to puddle and dry resulting in high friction.

                    (2) Contact tips on the solenoid that rewinds the clock's mainspring can pit/corrode resulting in high ohmic contact resistance.

So, those who rebuild/restore these electro mechanical tick tocks fight the same issues in general...

Sorry Jeffrey, I did not give you my e-mail address to send me the articles. It is vfhutchinson@carolina.rr.com. I think the articles may help but $50 at clockworks. That price is hard to beat.

Yes please, It sounds extremely reasonable. I'd like to talk with them and find out what exactly they can do for my clock and can not do. I appreciate your efforts.

                              Dennis:
Please read one of my posts regarding my '65 clock restoration that was completed a couple of months ago:

...I wanted to restore my "less than functional" and "tired" looking clock, but wasn't sure how to approach the task. I got some very good advice that ranged from a minimal DIY fix to buying a reproduction clock. I took David Duell's advice and contacted Bill Harrison of Harrison Speedometer (561-676-3099) to get a price on restoring my original clock. David, you made an excellent recommendation -- I can't thank you enough ! Bill is a true gentlemen, does excellent work, his pricing is very fair, and he provided me with a fast turn-around time. My clock looks brand new! He also restores individual gauges and complete instrument clusters. Check out his website at www.harrisonspeedometer.com. I highly recommend him to all NCRS members in need of clock and instrument restoration. Since he is located relatively close to me in South Florida, I brought my clock to him in person, and had the pleasure of meeting David there as well. Both are great guys, and we spent some time talking about (give it some thought) -- you're right... our beloved Corvettes !! Thank you NCRS members for your continued advice and support. Now I'm not only cruisin' in style, but I'm also on time looking sharp .

                              Happy cruisin',
                              Roger Piper (50141)
