In Parts Catalogs, what does SHP mean?

I see things like 67, 327 except SHP. I have a 67 L79, it that considered SHP? Thanks, Bill

SHP = special high performance. The L79 was considered SHP engine.

      It's nice to be special.

This was Chevrolet's way to differentiate between parts applications in their P&A catalogs. In the front pages of these catalogs they list, for each year, what displacement and which engine identification codes would be identified in more easily understood parts-counter and car owner terms, back in the day.

An example for 1965: There were 19 different engine stamp pad codes (a record, I believe). But you could reduce these to a combination of common English terms.

Manual trans = HE (250hp - base engine, not mentioned)
Manual trans and High Performance = HF (300hp, not mentioned)
Special High Performance and Hydraulic Lifters = HT (350hp, not mentioned)
Special High Performance = HH (365hp with solid lifters, not mentioned)
Fuel Injection = HG (needed no further descriptive)

In conjunction with the above, additional descriptives of: Transistor Ignitiion, C.A.C. (air cond.), Powerglide, where permissible, they could cover all combinations without resorting to engine alpha codes.

Another example, for '67: If a big block, you could get into descriptives like: Heavy Duty, Aluminum Heads, Tri-Carb, A.I.R. (smog).

There is a difference. HP means high performance, and SHP means special high performance. In big blocks hydraulic lifter engines were referred to as HP and solid lifter engines were SHP.
