i am having on going problems with my starter on my 66 427. every once in a while it will not engage. it will whirl. i put in a new one last week, these are part store replacments, i took note of the flywheel as it was stopped where the last starter would not engage. i did not see any significant wear on the teeth, but some. the new starter did the same and i decided to turn the engine by hand on the off chance it was a "flat spot" it engaged right off. i then shimmed based on the sound as instructions showed. all seemed fine, but out of the blue it started again today. i turned the engine by hand and it started fine. i brought it in the bay and it would not engage. i decided to leave it and do some research. could it be the flywheel? or is it the after market starter not having the power it needs if the flywheel is not posisioned just right? i need to solve this before carlise.

Re: starter issue on 66
yes on both. the stater always seems snug when i remove them. i went about a year with a factory "365" starter after the motor rebuild then had a bad solonoid. i then decided to store the 365 starter and install a over the counter starter thinking it would be more reliable. a year and a half later with no issues i replaced the trans. after that as i had posted earlier i have been plagued with problems. i wish you could pull the inspection cover with out pulling the starter and the oil canister. i will pull the cover and put it all back and visually inspect the engagment.- Top

Re: starter issue on 66
yes, but maybe not correctly. it is my understanding shimming will not make the difference between engagment and nonengagment it only will effect longevity and noise, will not know until i pull the cover and reassemble and inspect. i am leaning towards the flywheel. how worn would it have to be to not engage enough to turn the engine?- Top

Re: starter issue on 66
I think the ring gear would REALLY have to be trashed to be the cause of the problem; I've never seen one that bad. I'd suspect the Bendix before the flywheel ring gear.- Top

Bill, being in the auto repair bussiness these days reman. parts quality seems to really be at a low when it comes to reman. starters and alt.s my advice if you didnt have this problem before I would be looking at puttting in another starter. ive been there and done it many times.I do have good luck with ac delco remans. you should know that there a different qualitys also. with in the same brand of delco. be sure to ask.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: starter issue on 66
Bill,
Can you unhook the coil + wire, get under the car safely and have someone crank the engine and watch to see when it happens the position of the ring gear teeth in relation to the starter drive.
I know this sounds crazy but did you count the teeth on the bendix drive and compare them to the old starter?? Could a foreign made bendix be the problem?- Top
