I was the PV Judge for this 1966 Maroon, 425 hp, side-pipe coupe. As usual during the Arizona Meets, it was sunny and the owner was wearing very dark sunglasses. I started the test by asking for his insurance, registration, and proof of a prior Flight Award. When I got to the "driver's license" part he did not have one, for the reason stated above. What Terry left out, was that he also said: "That's OK because I have a private pilot's license!"
    Go figure.

No, I am not kidding. Ask Roy.

In this case, the owner's [licensed]designate was with him and was allowed to perform the driving portion of the test.

    The car passed.

I think I know the guy you are talking about. Not only dose he have a privet pilot's license he was also commercial airline pilot before he had to retire because of his failing eyesight. Is that why they have auto pilot on the airplanes? If he gets in thecockpit with a seeing eye dog I am off that plane. Just kidding he is a nice guy.

I don't think the state of Ohio issuses titles in a dealers name. They just hold the signed off title they get when they buy the car untill they sell the car and then they get a title for the new owner.

          Lyle -

That's probably true in a consignment situation, but not for a dealer who actually buys the car; I've verified ownership for judging of several Pro Team cars, and all of them were Ohio-titled to "Pro Team Corvette Sales Inc.".

John is right. A dealer can only transfer the title to another dealer. If he sells to a non registered dealer he must title it in the dealers name. I live in Indiana & bought my wife a new Solstices from a Ohio dealer & because I was out of state he had to get a Ohio title in the new car dealers name. It is illegal to jump a title from one person to another. States want the sales tax money.

Do dealers pay sales tax to get a car in their name?

                JUMP TITLE???

I would have never thought about doing that!!!!!

I bought my first Corvette in 1967 and during the late 60s and on into the 70s, I bought a few more. I would go look at a car and if I was serious, I would check the title. A lot of the time, the seller would be three or four times removed from the name on the title.

I once looked at a VERY NICE FULLY LOADED '65 Coupe for $850.00 but when I looked to varify the Vin, it seemed to have a 63 Vin tag attached with big pop rivets and there seemed to be recently removed numbers on the engine pad. I passed on the car but as I was leaving, the seller asked if I would not mention this to anyone. This all took place in a questionable part of town. My buddy and I got out of there fast. I mentioned this to a neighbour who was CHP Officer. I asked him to try to keep me out of it. He later said he took care of it. I never knew the outcome.

Now days, If I buy a car, the seller had better have the title in order.

That is incorrect. In Ohio, we are issued titles to all of our ( pre owned ) vehicles. We do not pay tax on them, as they are for resale and we collect the tax when we sell them.

Thanks Tom. It seems like extra paperwork and trouble for no gain for the state or the dealer. We must need to keep the girls at the BMV busy and the state gets a fee for the dealer title.
If you get a trade in and it sells within a few hours do you still need a title put in the dealership name?
I know jumping titles is illegal but at the big shows like Carlisle people buy underpriced cars on Wed. and sell by Sat. all the time.
