    1969 L-46 Pulley Question

I have a 1969 350/350 with what appears to be the original motor and correct A.I.R. system. The A.I.R pulley (3932458 DA) and the front water pump pulley (3883235 DS) both have the D_ stamped on them. The other pulleys do not have any D_ stamp on them. Is the D_ some kind of a 'broad cast code'? Just curious if other have any information of this?
    Thanks for any comments,
    Steve

I have a late built 69 (11/28/69) and the highlighted pulleys are what came with my car; no way to verify they are original to the car but there is a good chance they are.

This is a Joe Lucia subject for sure. I think he will chime in.

Yes, the 2 alpha character code found on most pullies is, indeed, a broadcast code used to enable quick, assembly-line identification of pullies. This was especially important with pullies since so many different ones were used for different applications.

While most pullies had a broadcast code stamped on them, not all did, The ones that USUALLY did were the waterpump, crank, and AIR pullies. Alternator pullies, on the other hand, rarely had broadcast codes or, even, part numbers stamped on them. Why I do not know.

          Re: 1969 L-46 Pulley Question

related to this older topic - I have been verifying my pulley set up of my March 69 L46 w/o PS and AIR. Reason is because I have issues with the length (too long) of the alternator belt and the belt between water pump and fan (removed on below pic) - both fairly new Quanta belts with 3000 miles or so - pulleys are also new. This is my set up and looking at the AIM this seems to be correct -

Question - do I need a belt between the water pump and the fan?

The current belts are 9 mm wide (is that 3/8 inch?? - sorry I am in metric country) - is that correct or shall I try current day generic replacements which are normally wider?

          Thanks again, erik

Yes, you need a belt between the waterpump and the HARMONIC BALANCER PULLEY (no such thing as a belt between the waterpump and fan).

You will need a reproduction belt for the waterpump-to-balancer application; the length has to be exact and no standard belt will be exact.

Most original belts were 3/8" wide.

Thanks Joe - a belt between water pump and fan is somewhat difficult
