    55 Hubcaps Paint Color

I just got my hub Caps back from the chrome shop (dents, chrome and polish repair) I need to re paint the red in the little slots......What I see is the slot is not full of red paint when they masked it off to paint they left a lot of area unpainted..... My question is Do I follow the same lines or fill the slots so it looks better or does it matter?

    Is the color Sportsman Red?

    Thanks Bob

Roy: Did the Harvest Gold Vette Caps get Yellow or Red Paint?
        I have one of each...
        Thanks for the info. Sam

Roy noted that all '53 - '55 wheel covers were painted similarly. The photo below is of one of the unrestored wheel covers on my '54.

The red clearly does not fill the slots.

Also note that the mask used by the factory did not completely cover the wheel cover and there is red paint right at the edge where it turns under. All four wheel covers on my car show this to varying degrees.

As to color, the wheel cover red is, to my eye, indistinguishable from the original red of the wheels themselves. This isn't apparent in the photo due to the angle of the camera; straight on, though, it's very obvious.

I have a set with black inserts and oddly enough I know that Russ bought a set that had black inserts. My 54 is a 15,000 mile car still on the original title. Of course anything can happen over 55 years.

                    Joe,

How very curious, as is the early wheel cover with yellow inserts. In the case of the set with black, does the black fill the depression completely or is there only partial coverage, as seen in the picture of one of my covers?

                    Regards,

                    Jim

                      I will look this weekend.

I suspect you are correct that all production caps were painted red..but maybe a few special orders got made...and others got repainted. Just think of how many wheels introduced in the 80's got polished.
