steering box play on C3
I have a 70 with power steering. Car is almost completely dis-assembled. Steering column is out. I notice some play in the steering box when I turn the rag joint by hand. I have never driven the car, so I don't know if there is any steering wander or not. Does anyone know how much play is normal? thanks, Steve

Since you have it out, put it in a vise and check the lash through center. You should start out about 5 in/lbs climb to 12 on center and then back down to 5. Don't be surprised to find 2-5 through out the range. You can adjust the box but since it out I would go through it.

Sorry for the confusion Gary. My steering box is still in the car. Is there something I can check to see if it needs adjustment or rebuild? I read the article - thanks. It was very informative and makes me think that is something I should not try to do myself. SteveComment
