    Re: Trim and Vin mistakes

Desscrepancies also occurred with "newer Corvettes". I have a white 1986 convertible with a trim tag (service parts label) that shows medium blue metallic. After receiving signed documents by the original owner and delivering dealer attesting to the white color, I asked General Motors how this could happen. Surprisingly, they answered by saying that in early years of C-4 production, service parts labels were batch printed up to 5 days in advance of production. If any production changes occurred in the interim, a new label should be generated but there is a chance that it may not have been. After obtaining a build sheet, it was confirmed that the car was originally painted white. Since the build sheet is the document used to build the car, it is most likely of all documents to be correct.

      Hello Philip!

I'm back to researching this trim tag thing again, and was wondering if you might be so kind as to send a photo of your car and tag?

It would certainly help me convince the other folks who have doubts about my car! ( I'm sure you can appreciate my predicament)

This thread got me thinking. Let me begin with the statement: this is not meant to mean that the car in question is a fake. It is understood that VIN and Trim tags had discrepancies.

What if some former owner wanted a convertible and took the (convertible) body off another car and put it on his coupe chassis? Or, vice-versa. Wouldn't this be a possible explanation for a VIN being wrong?

I guess I'll break down and buy the Grenning/Sinor trim tag book... it sounds like very interesting reading... and you never know, maybe my car will be in the second editions?

              Vin mistakes

I advertised in the NCRS Driveline Information Wanted section for many months a couple years ago to find the current owner of a 64 red Corvette convertible that my wife once owned. The VIN was in the add.
Another NCRS member called me one day and gave me information on the current owner.
I wrote the current owner a letter explaining who the original owner of the 64 Corvette he had was and was interested in car.
The current owner called and verified the VIN was the same. He had painted the car white although white was not the original color and said there was no evidence that it had ever been red and did not have red interior. The original engine was not in the car when the current owner purchased it.
My wife has video film of the bought new 1964 and still has the Corvette Owner Card with VIN number, Corvette pin, and the Corvette patch.
A couple possibilites are the VIN is wrong on the Corvette Owner Card or the VIN plate has been changed on the current owners car.
