1962 One Owner Garage Find...Opinions Needed

    Hi all,

I wanted to pass along several photo's of a one owner locally bought new 1962 near my house that is for sale. The car was purchased from a local dealership in 1962 and has been owned and driven by the same family since new. What I know about the car so far because space in the garage was very limited and dimmly lit so extremely close inspection of any important parts was impossible. Will be able to tomorrow. It's a 327-250 HP, 3 speed, white with red interior, radio car with hard top. I spoke with the fellow who is helping the family sell the car and he said the engine has had some work done to keep it running as it hasn't been driven much in the last 20+ years. New belts, hoses..etc. No overhauls. The interior is about 5+ out of a 10. The odemoeter shows 35,000 but hasn't work for sometime. The paint is really flaking off in the back. All the glass matches and the underside looks good as well. It appears to have the original painted exhaust still underneath. Can tell better tomorrow. Semi- close inspection of the engine compartment looks good. I could only verify a few correct numbers. The fuel filter is aftermarket and the guy selling thinks the carb was changed out because it went bad..his words. I wasn't able to view any numbers on it. This car is a good candadite for a survivor and I would appreciate opinions to condition and more importantly to value. I meant to include that original paperwork is supposed to be included.

    Thanks,
    Craig

Whats it worth questions can draw many mixed responses. I don't know why no one responded but I will give it a try. The claimed originality and history as well as condition should bring a premium over a typical driver quality 62. It is a low horse 3 speed which will lower its overall apeal. Driver quality 62s seem to be selling between $25 and $35K. With a paint job, new replacement parts and freshening of existing original parts a restorer will have $15 to $25k additional expense not including labor to restore this car. A top flight 250 horse 3 speed with new paint might sell between $55 and $75K. All things considered I think this car would sell between $35 and $45K. I am not a professional appraiser so this is just an opinion.

That's the kind of find that gives me chills ! Check it out and if it all checks out, just own it. That kind of stuff doesn't just show up very often any more.

        Thanks for the photos.

My $0.02: If I was trying to come up with an offer I wouldn't consider restoration costs at all since there wouldn't be any....wouldn't touch a thing, just drive it......it's got patina as they say on antiques roadshow.

          good luck

Not a big deal to me. If someone else wants to go and buy it away from me then great.

            Thanks,

It always amazes me when cars like this pop up out of the woodwork. It's nice to see these cars still exist! Thanks for sharing, and keep us posted on your progress on this car!

I'm patiently waiting on the 62 owners to comment on this car. Where are they?

Yes Patina !!!! I love messing with things but you could just live with this the way it is. (I'd pay 35k no more.) my 10 cents worth. Stewy

                      Things I see changed/wrong/questionable:
                      Interior mirror
                      carb
                      fuel line
                      choke heat tube
                      Hoses and clamps
                      hood weatherstrip re-glued
                      trunk mat
                      trunk bolt
                      Expansion tank bracket
                      expansion tank cap
                      shielding top bolt
                      fresh air hose and clamps
seat covers look too good for the rest of the interior
I suspect that the steering wheel hub has been repainted
Valve covers have been repainted--original decals missing
Either the radiator has been repainted on the top or the tag is missing
(warning tags on the radiator and the exp. tank)

It is a non-posi car--no posi instructions on the trunk plywood
Having said all that--it looks like a very nice car. Probably would be a Bloomington survivor. May or may not be a NCRS bowtie candidate. One would have to assess much more than those pics to get a real feel whether it would or would not.

I appreciate everyone's advise so far. This car will be bought by someone in the near term. My friend was is pictures in the second picture has the first right of refusal on the car but he really has no interest. I will be able to have a better look today and can make a better educated guess as to originality and value. Comments are still helpful at this point.

                            Thanks,

Terry it does have the original trunk mat. It was out during the picture taking. The radiator is correct. The Harrison tag was there but all covered up in gunk. Other items can be verified today.
