C1 Bellhousing Removal

I am about to swap Transmissions for my car, and i also have the correct 1960 bellhousing.

The car is still in hibernation, and I was wondering if it is possible to remove the bellhousing while the transmission is out without removing the engine?

Yes, it's possible.

Undo the clutch linkage, remove the starter, take out the bolts around the bellhousing and the bellhousing will come off the engine.

Undo the clutch linkage, remove the starter, take out the bolts around the bellhousing and the bellhousing will come off the engine.

You need to be careful with support of the back of the motor or you may bend the pan. Maybe some of the readers will post their process. I have done this a number of times.

Don't damage your Oil Pan. John Hinckley designed a wood saddle 91/2'" long piece of 2" x 6", and the sides from 9" long 1" x 6". Mount the sides pieces on top of the base and attach with long wood screws thru the bottom. Cut a clearance notch for the dipstick tube bump on the left side. The saddle will suport the engine on the oil pan rail, leaving the pan claered from damage. I used this with slider bolts to remove both the transmission and bellhousing in good shape. p.s. don't forget to plug the output shaft, unless you like oil all over the place.
