Z Max - is it good to use?

I have a 71 small block (all stock) with 270 HP. The engine has 64/K miles on it. I've been seeing Z Max advertised more and more. Is this product safe to use on older engines? Does anyone else use it or have any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Greg

Why don't you tell us what this product is and what it's supposed to do.

Okay, I'm usually not into these sort of addtitives, but I will relay my story. I have a friend who was a sale rep for the company a couple years ago. He swore by it and had no reason to try and convince me.
He sent me a couple free bottles for a motorcycle and I used them in my '01 Triumph Speed triple. There was a noticeable differrence in how the engine ran, seemed much smoother and rev'd easier. Just a subjective opinion.

I tried the product back in the 1990s. I got less than 1 mile per gallon better mileage. It's not worth the money.

Is this the stuff pushed by Mr. Shelby? Supposed to be the only chemical/lubricant that will penetrate metal - is added to the gas?

It's on TV and Carol Shelby promotes it. It's a lubricant for the oil system and a product added to the gasoline. It supposedly penetrates the metal, lubricates better and removes/reduces carbon on valves ect.

I just learned today that the company is owned by Bruton Smith (also owns Lowes, Texas and Atlanta Motor Speedways). I was more curious as I see more and more advertisements and commercials. I was watch "2 Guys Garage" and they used while rebuilding a small block chevy and swear it reduces the friction on initial starts.

              website is www.zmax.com

              Just curious about it.

The last time I saw Shelby he was facing possible criminal action by the State of California for trying to pawn off a couple of "1967" 427 Cobras that were assembled from "left over parts" about ten years ago. I think he got away with a reprimmand and agreed to label them "off road use only."

If you use the correct automotive fluids for each particular application (and all have been discussed here extensively), there is absolutely no need for any "additives" except in some special circumstances, but there is no end of promoters and hucksters trying to separate fools from their money.

....................stop watching "Two Guys' Garage". For that matter, stop watching any and all of the "automobile how-to" shows on Speed and/or Spike.

All of them are very thinly disguised infomercials. That is, if you can hear anything over the ultra heavy fuzzbox distorted guitar noise. The only thing worth watching on these travesties, are the buxom babes. If I want to see dopey broads with big b**bs, I watch Playboy channel.

Heck, quit watching TV completely. The only thing I watch is PBS Nova, Frontline, and some of the concerts (HD over the air with a two-dollar Radio Shack antenna).

Get your news from the Internet, and you don't have to sit through a bunch of fluff.

Rather than TV I listen to music - right now Jimi Hendrix' "All Along the Watchtower" is playing. Grand Funk Railroad's "Closer to Home" is up next followed by The Alan Parson's Project's "The Tell-Tale Heart" - the all time best hard rock tune ever produced!

Classic rock goes great with classic cars. Anyone got a light?

The only time I watch PBS is when they are begging for funding. That's, so it seems, the only time they have any good concerts. Otherwise, now having an extensive list of HD stations for my 60" SONY 1080P, I have more entertainment available than I have time to view, i.e. recently watched on HDNET a helicoptor tour over many attractions in Italy. Loved it as we had an extended family guided ground tour back in 1983 and this brought back a lot of fond memories. Not much has changed (Ha!), except the speed limit on the Autostrada. Always wished I had either my Vette there for the tour or at least my 83 Z28 H.O.. It would have been more fun than with the Fiat Panda loaned to me by my Brother in law. He drove a big BMW and I passed him several times on the Amalfie coast road. That little sucker had great brakes and a good gear box (1300cc).

Saw Dave Mason in concert at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts last friday. He does a nice version of All Along the Watchtower. According to Dave, when he was 16 he played accoustic guitar on Hendrix's recording of All Along the Watchtower. That type of "accomplishment" makes what ever I was doing at 16 pale in comparision.

Duke, You are gonna be out of commission with the rabbit ears shortly my friend.
I did get a couple of TV converter box coupons worth 40 buks each but they expired one month ago. visit www.DTV2009.gov
for nice free coupon Duke. I have a TV for my little trailer that I guess I will need the rip off box for. JD
