you guys are on the wrong web site this is for chevy corvettes......................
Check out my signature - I/we own two GM's including a Corvette. I'm not sure much of this thread directly applies to Corvettes - mostly the dismal performance of GM.

GM is asking for the money. Its not like Obama (the democratically elected president of the united states. If I could stomach 8 years of Bush, then everyone else can stomach 5 months of Obama) If the GM doesn't like the strings, they don't have to take the money and they can make it or break it on their own merits. I think we all know what would happen then.

Also, this forum is for old corvettes right? not "new corvettes". I've always owned japanese cars because I've never had a problem to speak of and saw too many problems suffered by my friends with american cars. I guess that makes me unpatriotic. I like the looks of the C6 and the new Camaro, but unless I stop hearing about stuff like that gasket going out at 36K I'm still going to keep buying Toyota. Its kind of hard to get over the past, when the past keeps on happening. I don't see a whole lot of relative change in quality. Maybe they are better than GM cars of the 80's and 90's but I still don't see them being as good as Toyota or Nissan TODAY. All the posturing about what makes a car American or not American is all percentages anyway. 60% of this or 80% of that. if they go out of business its not because someone is more or less patriotic than someone else. Its because they made a less competitive product than someone else. Did AMC and Studebaker go out of business because American buyers were unpatriotic? No, it was due to missteps by their management. Same with GM, except now the competition is Japanese and German. That's capitalism. That's globalism.

I noticed Obama has said the govt will honor GM warranties if they go under. Is that a good thing, or is that socialism?

In any event we need to have a GM and a Ford, because if we ever have another World war, we're going to need them.

It depends on how you define problems & what one considers routine maintenance.

I replace the plugs, wires, distributor, vacuum harness, and water pump every 100K whether they need it or not. The plugs and wires are on Chevrolet's maintenance schedule for 100K anyway. I am working on what I think is an ignition issue now with one of them. After the coil and module (they were the originals, so at 200K I didn't feel bad about replacing them) didn't cure the problem -- but did raise the ignition trace from 3K to 8K -- the distributor is next. It is due anyway. Then it will be the plugs and wires. I have already changed the vacuum harness just for S & G. Oh and I change the fuel pumps every 100K and fuel filter every 50K. No big deal if one plans these things. It only becomes ugly if one pushes the limits and the car goes dead in the water.

In spite of the well-known aggravations of the opti-spark system I believe it to be a good system. It has served me well.

It will be interesting to see how the new head will direct G.M. How much input will the gov. have in the new products. Whose head will fall if the new products do not sell, and will there be cars like our Corvettes in the future. Remember, new rules for California,no black cars in the near future."

If Rick is guilty of any thing, he is guilty of following Milton Friedman's (Nobel prize winner in economics) advice that the only responsibility of a corporate executive is to provide value to the share holders.
I'm not a big Rick Wagoner fan but we shouldn't overlook his accomplishments - Buick is now the leader in global vehicle dependability based on the 2009 J.D Powers ratings. Cadillac is also in the top 10. The UAW has taken significant contract reductions negotiated under Wagoner's tenure. Sure, they don't take affect until next year but GM is a pretty big ship to turn around quickly.
GM has a sizable stable of high-mileage cars which the fickle American buyer choses to ignore - maybe because in the 70s and 80s, long before Wagoner was in GM leadership, the buyer bought a shoddy GM product, but that is not the case now.
Lastly, and I'm sure it is the one thing we can all agree on, none of us want our government telling our corporations who should be running them. GM may be down now, but they have never been mismanaged as much as our government
                    Amen,well said!

Guess I'll run right out and put my order in for a new Camarobama, or maybe a Burack. Ya! I think I'd like one of those.

All you Nissan, Toyota, Mazda and Honda lovers need to go out and rent the movie "The Raid". Take from it what points you will.

250k on a 1989 camaro. Never needed any engine , transmission or rear end work. Great car ! Serviced it and it kept running. I got tired of the color and got a new GMC truck. My son in law has a Toyota and now he wants a real truck.

OMC = Obama Motors Corp. What is next, health care, (you name the industry), etc. Sounds like socialism.
Plus, "new leadership is needed at GM", so I am appointing a guy that has no business experience and I am giving him 60 days to correct the problems at OMC. Oh, Chrysler, you got 30 days to make a deal with Fiat!!

So, if OMC fails, do all of the employees go on unemployment/welfare and further burden the country? Plus, what about many of the related supply companies and their employees? Well, the socialist government will take care of them.
The Federal Govt can't balance their own budget and make it work efficiently, so let them run private business too!! Sounds like a winner.

You guys can buy your Toyoyo's, Fonda's, etc but I will stand behind an American company until Obama buries them. I am certain my Dad and his brother are rolling over in their grave, thinking that this country might have nothing but Japanese cars. They fought for what? DEMOCRACY
