Re: CEO Rick Wagoner asked to Resign by the Anointed One
I wish the new head of GM all the luck in the world because he will need it!
His biggest obstacle will be trying to change public perception that GM only sells junk that is just waiting to fail as soon as the warranty is over and that the asian imports will last forever with even better reliability than the best Swiss watch.
I have nothing against the asian imports but I've personaly never seen anything to suggest that they were any better than anything made in North America. My Dad had a Toyota dealership years ago so growing up I was well exposed to the full line...nice cars and trucks but nothing special.
About a year after he sold the dealership he bought a 88 Tercel and I remember how great that car was. We got it second hand with about 8k miles on it and my brother ended up using it for most of it's life until he sold it about three years ago with about 160k miles. Ya that was a great car...three alternators due to the cases splitting in it's first four years. Back then the car was still too new for the jobers to have any so Toyota was charging about $500 a pop. The last alternator was a jober one and for some reason it lasted until we sold the car. Then at about 90k miles it started popping out of 5th gear on the highway, shortly after that the engine started smoking and using oil. On top of that the variable venturi carb that they used never idled properly and towards the end the body was full of rust. I will say the seats still looked new with minimal wear after all those years and miles...but that's all the praise I can give it.
Fast forward to by buddies 2004 Nissan Pathfinder. Nice looking vehical but burns gas like it's free and he has had nothing but problems with his low tire pressure sensors from day one and brake pulsating issues from about 15k miles. He's had the rotors, calipers bearing all replaced on spec so far with no results other than a lighter wallet. Ya it's superior all right
My intent isn't to bash the asian cars but I don't see how they are much different than the domestics. What I see today is people flocking to the asian imports because there is the perception that they are superior to the domestics. Heck I asked a guy at work what he thought of the new Camaro and he totaly shot it down saying how he'd rather get a civic si.
He then went on to slam the Cobalt SS saying it was just cheap Cavalier... It might be but even the V6 Camaro will eat the Cobalt SS for lunch and the Cobalt SS wil leave the civic si in it's dust on all counts including gas mileage...the civic is about $1500 cheaper though.
Maybe there was a time when the asian cars really were better however I've never personaly seen that. There is this false perception though that they are still superior today and that is too bad for the new guy at GM. Unless he can somehow remove the blinders from the car buyers and steer this "herd" away from it's way of thinking.....well old habit's are hard to break and I wish him all the luck in the world.
