Re: CEO Rick Wagoner asked to Resign by the Anointed One

I wish the new head of GM all the luck in the world because he will need it!

His biggest obstacle will be trying to change public perception that GM only sells junk that is just waiting to fail as soon as the warranty is over and that the asian imports will last forever with even better reliability than the best Swiss watch.

I have nothing against the asian imports but I've personaly never seen anything to suggest that they were any better than anything made in North America. My Dad had a Toyota dealership years ago so growing up I was well exposed to the full line...nice cars and trucks but nothing special.

About a year after he sold the dealership he bought a 88 Tercel and I remember how great that car was. We got it second hand with about 8k miles on it and my brother ended up using it for most of it's life until he sold it about three years ago with about 160k miles. Ya that was a great car...three alternators due to the cases splitting in it's first four years. Back then the car was still too new for the jobers to have any so Toyota was charging about $500 a pop. The last alternator was a jober one and for some reason it lasted until we sold the car. Then at about 90k miles it started popping out of 5th gear on the highway, shortly after that the engine started smoking and using oil. On top of that the variable venturi carb that they used never idled properly and towards the end the body was full of rust. I will say the seats still looked new with minimal wear after all those years and miles...but that's all the praise I can give it.

Fast forward to by buddies 2004 Nissan Pathfinder. Nice looking vehical but burns gas like it's free and he has had nothing but problems with his low tire pressure sensors from day one and brake pulsating issues from about 15k miles. He's had the rotors, calipers bearing all replaced on spec so far with no results other than a lighter wallet. Ya it's superior all right

My intent isn't to bash the asian cars but I don't see how they are much different than the domestics. What I see today is people flocking to the asian imports because there is the perception that they are superior to the domestics. Heck I asked a guy at work what he thought of the new Camaro and he totaly shot it down saying how he'd rather get a civic si. He then went on to slam the Cobalt SS saying it was just cheap Cavalier... It might be but even the V6 Camaro will eat the Cobalt SS for lunch and the Cobalt SS wil leave the civic si in it's dust on all counts including gas mileage...the civic is about $1500 cheaper though.

Maybe there was a time when the asian cars really were better however I've never personaly seen that. There is this false perception though that they are still superior today and that is too bad for the new guy at GM. Unless he can somehow remove the blinders from the car buyers and steer this "herd" away from it's way of thinking.....well old habit's are hard to break and I wish him all the luck in the world.

Nobody......... nobody has said import tax, tariff. No other country in the world, or should I say globe ( like I hear global ) lets foreign cars in with out a tax. Would Japan for instance let GM build a plant in their country (give all kinds of tax, state, breaks incentives, etc.) And let GM (American cars)on an even par with their cars. LMAO.....never,never happen. So GM.....& America the writing is on the wall. People in this country have turned their backs on domestics, and we will all pay. This makes me sick. All you guy's thinking that this will not affect YOU, wake up. You have children, grandchildren. Hope that GM does not file.

Re: CEO Rick Wagoner asked to Resign by the Anointed One

Has anyone stopped to think of what just happened
1 Democrats now own the big banks
2 Democrats now own GM and Chrysler
And now there passing a bill to take over any business if they feel the need, I remember when the Government load Chrysler 5B years ago and Chrysler paid it back, but our President at the time dint fire the head and take it over.
Obama ( the so called great ONE) and the Democrats have done such a good job of making people hate ( I mean hate) big business and any one making money that there is now a mob intensity to kill anyone running a business or making money.
What the hell is wrong with people that give ONE party the power to do this. Just reading many posted comments her proves my point. People think it's only the big guy getting screwed ,your NEXT!
He's breaking the treasury starting new programs , next year if you sell your Corvette for 100K do you think your getting to keep it all. I'd like some one to tell me what Government program you just love the Government running . That's it for me buying a GM car with the (great Chosen one) guaranteeing my warranty . I just became a FORD owner!!!!!
Clinton started the politically correct war ,now Obama started the class war fair!

Amen. Thanks for stepping up and telling it like it is. All cars have problems, some just more then others, especially when not taken care of.

What about the small Toyota trucks in the 90's that had rotted out frames? They were quietly giving large rebates to these owners to buy a new Toyota and then crushing the old ones. The rebates were only good up to a certain year. A woman in this area with a newer truck that was not covered but had the same problem had to fight tooth and nail to get Toyota to take care of her.
Rotted frame= Engineers from the fifties must have learned how to avoid this problem.

Does Phoenix Graphics make any decals of the Rising Sun or the Swatika that I could paste on my doors to show how many of those suckers I've blown away with my old 2000 Impala? That runner has over 100k on it now and it's 3.8 doesn't miss a beat. No oil smoke, original plugs - what can I say. Havn't met an Accord or Maxima that will stay with it - course I know how to drive where the average Ignorant Japanese car buyer barely knows where the gas goes. There are a lot more of them in the junk yards cause the owners thought they were maintenance free.

I can not comment on whether or not he should go but the government has no business dictating that he must go. Our leader is stepping all over our Constitution.

If Rick is guilty of any thing, he is guilty of following Milton Friedman's (Nobel prize winner in economics) advice that the only responsibility of a corporate executive is to provide value to the share holders.
I'm not a big Rick Wagoner fan but we shouldn't overlook his accomplishments - Buick is now the leader in global vehicle dependability based on the 2009 J.D Powers ratings. Cadillac is also in the top 10. The UAW has taken significant contract reductions negotiated under Wagoner's tenure. Sure, they don't take affect until next year but GM is a pretty big ship to turn around quickly.
GM has a sizable stable of high-mileage cars which the fickle American buyer choses to ignore - maybe because in the 70s and 80s, long before Wagoner was in GM leadership, the buyer bought a shoddy GM product, but that is not the case now.
Lastly, and I'm sure it is the one thing we can all agree on, none of us want our government telling our corporations who should be running them. GM may be down now, but they have never been mismanaged as much as our government
Dale, I couldn't agree with you less. Wagoner built and sold what was easy. Same old stuff with a slight twist. The country has been in trouble with imported oil for decades. Alternatives have been around forever. While we have all been recently informed that global warming is not so, the fact remains that we need to shift away from oil imports; build cars that are innovative in styling and production methods; focus on quality (not just say the margins on a Cadillac are good-Wagoner); look to the future with the same passion that made the company an icon of the past.
Wagoner is not a leader. He has no passion for moving the industry to a position of regained market share. He should have been fired long ago.
There seems to be some very fundamental flaws that have developed in our national values. From Barney Frank to Rick Wagoner the country needs to focus on values that allow a republic to flourish. Hope things turn soon.

Re: CEO Rick Wagoner asked to Resign by the Anointed One

Its real easy math. Since becoming the main boss at GM
the company has lost over 55Billion and its market share has declined from 33% to slightly over 17%. The value of the company has declined 98% and its good faith with the public has eroded. Shame on the Board of Directors for not sending him packing 6 years ago and bringing in someone who has vision as to the true future of what America needs in personal transportation. We need both ultra fuel efficient and mixed technology vehicles and specialty niche vehicles (Corvette). With good management and UAW cooperation its doable. Waggoner was asleep for the last 6 years.
                      Good riddance!

just to stir the pot, I know my opinion is pretty much universally despised on this board, but I'll google "japanese cars are not reliable 2009". The first hit is an article form Consumer Reports, 2009 indicating exactly the opposite. My uncle used to rib me endlessly about buying Japanese until he got sick of the repair bills and bought an Acura SUV.

Out of 35 cars mentioned, 3 are American... I'm sure we can just sit here and tit for tat stories about rusted frames and busted trannies, but GM wouldn't be in the fix they are in if they sold a better product than Toyota. And loyalty to GM aside, if we prop them up indefinitely with no strings attached, well that just about is socialism isnt it?

By the way, don't buy gas at Valero (CITGO), it's owned by Venezuela. I don't. So I know where my gas comes from, but not really sure where it goes... in the tank?

I believe that Valero is a United States public held corporation and is not owned by Venezuela. CITGO is owned by Venezuela.

thanks John. I'm sure you're right, but there's a lot on the web saying they are related, or at least profiting directly from venezuelan oil. Hard to know one way or the other with so much misinformation....
