1971 What Color Half Shafts and Drive Shaft

The half shafts and drive shaft on my 71 were painted black. For judging should I just leave them or paint them natural finish. If I should paint them which color and paint should I use? Should either of them have any stenciled numbers?

    Thanks Paul

The driveshaft and half-shafts were not originally painted on any 71. So, for judging purposes, I would remove the paint. This might not restore the original finish, but it will be a lot closer than leaving them painted. Understand that when the paint is removed, they'll rust. That was not the original finish, either.

Driveshaft gets the GM part number. Not sure for auto trans cars, but according to Quanta and original examles I've seen, the '71 and '72 4-speed pt # is 3921675. Stenciled number is in yelllow, 1" characters, and is located approx 1/3 to 1/2 way from the trans to the diff. Others might add whether or not location was specific or random.

      Hope this helps.

Yes, GM #3921675 was the part number for the PRODUCTION driveshaft assembly. For 1971-72 Corvettes, the manual transmission and automatic transmission driveshafts were the same.
