    72 BB power steering hose

Spotted this last weekend while doing the normal spring inspection. Appears to be a crack in the rubber sheath of the power steering high pressure hose.

As you can see, the hose is dry, so there's no leak - yet.

Is this in danger of immediate rupture, or do I have a little time?

BTW - I assume that the hose clamp on the low pressure hose probably isn't correct. Comments?

    Thanks
    Randy

    Randall,

The clamp on the return hose at the pump is correct. There is a wire clamp that holds the two hoses together and that may have caused the crack in the rubber you are seeing.

If the rest of the hose looks good I probably would not be in a hurry to change it. JMHO

I'd say the clamp on the end of the return hose (low pressure) is original and correct.

The pressure hose is an original GM hose. If it were me, I'd replace this hose ASAP. You'll not be able to get an original GM hose as this, particular hose was discontinued without supercession years ago. However, replacements are easily available and not very expensive. Not too hard to replace, either.

Mine had a similar crack and was leaking. Decided to replace both hoses as there were other signs of age and cracking, you just don't know when it's going to let go. The replacement kit which looks very similar to original was only 50 bucks and surprise I fitted it myself.

In regard to the return line clamp: According to the AIM and the TIM&JG the clamp should be a crimp type not a screw type, it goes under part # 5690839...see picture.

I just ran all of the pump to valve hoses through the GMPartsDirect websight. None of the pressure hose part numbers come up any longer (SB flare end 3826277, SB metric o-ring 7834409, & BB flare end 3878886). But the return hose assembly 3826278 still shows up as a good part number.
As far as I know, the return line hose always had a crimped collar that held it in place on the tube assembly coming out of the valve.

I wonder if the service part still has that collar or if a typical one eared crimp clamp (Oetiker) is used for service.
            Go figure,
            Jim

Attached is a photo of a GM #3826278. I believe this part is, basically, an aftermarket piece with a GM parts label on it. This one was purchased about 8 years ago.

A quick search of GM dealer's across the country (via www.partsvoice.com) revealed that all of the above mentioned part numbers are available in some dealer's inventories. The dealer's carrying the parts are listed (including the dealer locations and telephone numbers).
