    Build sheet locations for 1970

I have just about given up looking for build sheet in my 70. It was not on tank, nor under seats or rug. Also was not in the dash or behind the door panels or other interior panels. The only place I haven't looked is inside the T-tops. Did they put them there? Anyone know how to remove the interior colored panel from the tops? Any other places to look - maybe inside seats? Steve

Steve, Sounds Like Youve Hit A Dead End. Ive Never Heard Of A Build Sheet Under The Tops, But If You Want To Take The Panel Of Theres One Phillips Screw And The Rest Are The Same Type Of Clips Used On Door Panels, Be Careful. Youll Need A Screwdriver Falt Head To Pry Upward At Each Clip To Seperate Theres About 4 Or 5 Clips On Each Top

I would say that the chance of finding a build sheet inside a t-top assembly is about as close to ZERO as anything could be. In fact, I suspect that the t-tops were assembled off-line and may not have been destined for a particular car at the time of their assembly.

You've pretty much looked in all the right places. Under the dash in the area of the steering column/pedal support is the most likely. Keep in mind, there's no guarantee that a sheet was ever originally left in any of the alternate locations; it's entirely "hit-and-miss". Some cars probably left the factory without even the one attached to the gas tank.

        Hi Steve and Joe,
Under my 71's roof panel soft trim I found the most beautiful crayon number. The last 3 digits of my VIN sequence, 589. It was/is as bright as the day it went on because, of course, it hadn't seen the light of day in about 30 years. The 89 digits are written on my build sheet too.
But no build sheet up there... sorry Steve.
        Regards,
        Alan

Interesting. I will take a look to see if I find anything.

Has anyone ever heard of finding a build sheet under the carpet of the storage doors behind seats? (I know am stretching it, but thought I'd ask before I take it apart) Steve

Same thing on the T-Tops from my late 71.

I've owned my 1972 since 1980 and I was never able to locate a build sheet either. I even dropped the tank and stripped out the interior in the early 80's, but no luck finding the sheet (or even the remnants of a sheet, including traces of glue on the tank). This makes me think that Joe's comment is probably correct, in that some Corvettes probably left the plant without a sheet attached to the tank (or in my case, even in the vehicle).

I've heard of the build sheet folded up and slipped inside the steering column.

I'll give it a try. Does the column have to come out to do that or can I see inside with a light and mirror?

should be able to see with a mirror as the opening would be right in front of the mounting plate

It is also likely that the build sheet for your car was removed by a previous owner. I discovered my 70's build sheet stashed in the area behind the tach in my original owner 70 years after purchase when I removed the air conditioning ducting on the drivers side. I did remove my window sticker with good results when new so the found build sheet is stored with it.
My original owner 68's build sheet was found behind the radio and also stored.

Steve, I attended a Corvette show called the Lone Star Corvette Classic at the Texas Motor Speedway a couple of years ago when I encountered a C-3 owner who had completely restored a Corvette found in a----you guessed it---a barn. Anyway he had tattered pieces of his build sheet. He said he found them inside his frame on the driver's side just about where the firewall began. He was using a tiny camera to detect rust there.

Most likely it was not glued very well to the tank. My 70 all option 454 Conv. one owner 40,000 MI. car had only the very top of the sticker left. on the left side of the gas tank. Most of the other places are wives tales or dumb luck.

Just 2 cents more on a convertible with AC. Due to the fact that the deck grilles only have an angled rubber deflector, verse the ducts from the Astro Ventilation on non AC cars: over the years of washing, rain, etc it most likely would have just deteriorated away.

Steve, I found it sandwich between the steering column and left dash panel. You have to lower a bit the column (two bolts in the floor plus two below the column). I found mine folded in that place.

                              Best regards
