Re: Build sheet locations for 1970

I have actually found 2 build sheets on my 68 vert. I got the tank sticker from the 2nd owner who laminated it in plastic, then while I was replacing the carpets, I was taking the old rugs out to the trash and while cramming into the can I found the 2nd copy stuck to the bottom of the drivers side carpet bottom. It was folded into a tiny square and was not a full sheet, it was cut vertically in half and actually must have been the top copy becuase it has blue pen writing on it adding the PO1 wheel covers to the build which is identicle to the one that was found on the tank sticker.
    Boy that was close...

Nice finds guys. It's sounds like the treasure hunt is on for some people. I didn't know that it was that common for more build sheets in these cars.

If you now someone that has a lift it makes the job a lot easier. You have to take the spare tire carrier down & unhook the gas lines & straps. I would guess it would take 3 hours or so with the car on a lift. Well worth it to protect your tank sheet. On my LT-1 CONV. the sheet was folded over like yours this is a good thing helped protect from fading & liquid damage. My tank was shot so I had no choice but to remove it after plenty of pictures.

Great thread! This is motivating me to take my tank down this winter and rescue that deteriorating Corvette Order Copy I can see from the filler opening...

I found the order copy for my '70 in a mouse nest under the passenger seat and in the driver's side kick panel vent...

More accurately, it WAS the mouse nest! Worst part is, the car is a ZR1. Thankfully - the little bugger didn't ingest the important bits showing the special purpose engine package, M22, HD brakes and 456 posi options...

Dan, I like you found what was left of my build sheet in the frame rail of my 72, The mice had made a nest. I was able to piece mine back together with tape at least what was left of it and can make out pretty much all the data. It took me a few hours in the garage to carefully remove and bag the pieces. then a weekend at the kitchen table piecing together. It was a neat find. and could not find another sheet any where in the car. So the sheet is now in a zip lock bag taped together.

Until you get to the 1973-82 St Louis Built Corvettes in which case the build sheet includes broadcast codes, a comprehensive list of RPOs that includes subordinate RPOs, key codes, and scheduling data that include the pre-assigned job number.

                  Ed,
A cautionary note for those who find themselves in a similar situation.
Ordinary clear adhesive tape will turn yellow over the years (10 or more depending on ambient temperature and UV light), and becomes difficult to see through. It will also stain the document. Folks who find themselves in a similar situation might consider using archival supplies instead of office supplies. One such supplier, although not the most budget source, is University Products. An Internet search will yield more sources and information.

                    Terry-

Can you recommend a paper conservator that has experience putting this kind of jig-saw puzzle pieces back together? Have all the shreds bagged & tagged - just need someone with patience and who knows how to mount them...

Sorry Dan; I have no such experience. There was a story in The Restorer about conservation of the tank sticker, but in that case the paper was intact only barely readable.

As a generalization you are better off finding someone local to you to do this kind of work. Just like plating and painting and upholstery you are much better off being able to have a one on one conversation with the person you are employing so that you both come to an understanding of your expectations and their abilities and the costs involved. You can usually find paper conservators through your local Historical Society or Library. Of course their is always the Internet.

Be prepared. What you are looking to have done is a very time consuming project. It will not come inexpensively unless you are prepared to do it yourself.

When I decided to have my tank sheet preserved here in Cincinnati. I first contacted the local historical museum they then put me in touch with a conservator shop they use for paper restoration, conservation and repair. If you do not have that in the town you live here is a organization that could help I personally have never used their help but it may help you.
