1971 Accelerator Cable Position & Reasons Why?

My 1971 acclerator cable was positioned inside the vertical ignition shield and the distributor top shield brackets. In this position the cable is wearing through to the cable because it rubs on the verticle shield/brackets. My assembly manual doesn't show whether it should be run inside or outside the shields but a picture in Paragon parts book shows the 1974-1981 accelerator cable running outside these shields.

    Questions:

    1. Does the cable run inside OR outside the vertical shields OR between the vertical ignition shield and the verticle distributor top shield backet to get to the carb????? Can't ever tell from pictures of the engine because the aircleaner, etc. blocks the view.

    2. Why did they design the cable to come through the firewall and then have to bend medially about 4 inches instead of it coming through the firewall in a position to run straight to the carb. Doesn't seem like a good design???????

Any help or pictures would be appreciated. Thanks

If you had your ignition shielding on---the cable would be inside that but outside the orange bracket? Great picture.

Here's my base motor 4 speed 71. As you can see with the shielding on, the cable runs inboard of the verticle shield and outside of the orange shield bracket.

          Hi Paul,
The sheath on my cable has a flat spot worn in it from where it rubbed on the support for 44,000 miles.
It does make a pretty quick change in direction after coming through the firewall, as you mention.
          Regards,

Re: 1971 Accelerator Cable Position & Reasons Why? Seal Position??

The acclerator came with a seal. Does the seal go between the firewall and the metal peice which is part of the acclerator cable or between the gas pedal and the metal piece on the cable? If it goes between the metal piece and the firewall the end of the acclerator seems to large to go through the hole. None of the manuals shows the position of the seal. Maybe it's obvious and I'm not looking at it correctly. My old one did not have a seal.
              Thanks Paul
