    Zora's and Elfi's House

What happened to Zora's and Elfi's house, his library, chair and desk, etc.? I always hoped it would become an intact museum, but certain that didn't and won't happen. It would have been great to have relocated it to the NCM. I dream big.

I always hoped for the same. It seems there were some changes in Elfi's last wishes at the last moment. Some of the items from the home are scheduled to go to the museum. I can't speculate on the future of some of the other priceless items that are in that home.

    Hopefully the items stay together.

Chevrolet actually owned some of the GM related contents in their home thru a "deal" that GM made with Zora prior to this death. I don't know the exact details, but Jerry Burton was handling it and I'm sure that Jerry will/has dealt with it appropriately.

Some years ago Gib Huffsteader(sp) worked with GM to 'pay' Elfie for many of the items in Zoras office including the contents of the files. In return Elfie was able to keep the room as it was when Zora died and use the money to help her cover her expenses in the later years. On her death the items would become the property of GM and become a part of the Heritage Museum. I know the NCM does cooperate on display of items owned by the Heritage Museum so they be avaiable there in the future. Both Gib and Jerry were a great help to Elfie in her later years.

          Re: Zora's and Elfi's House

When I went to medical school in Detroit from 1989-1993 I lived my first year in Grosse Pointe Park. Knowing that ZAD lived in one of the Grosse Pointes I checked the telephone book. You can imagine how surprised I was to see his address and phone number listed right there; I thought that it would be unlisted.

I found the house and used to drive by on occasion. I even saw him leave once and drive away in his 1990 convertible. It's interesting what you remember doing many years later...

I also had a chance to inspect Elfi's Chevelle at one point when she went to the Post Office and I saw the car sitting there. I can tell you that some of the details of the car were not done correctly when it was "restored" about 10 years later by someone and later sold. Too bad.

I might suppose then that the new Auto Industry Oversite Committee will end up with them, figure they are worthless, and they'll end up being thrown out with the trash like everything else of value in Washington these days.

I own that car today. I bought it in 98. Care to share any of the details you observed on this car during your inspection? I have several pictures of the car during the Duntov ownership, but never saw the car in person prior to the Ken Hicks "restoration"

I was lucky enough to have Elfi spend the weekend with me in 03 and was able to re unite her with her old car ! Made for some fun stories !

That's about the same as it was in the early 90s. The car in the driveway was different, though.

There are quite a few photos in this listing.

Needs updating pretty bad to live in it. Doing so would be remove the history. Somehow can just picture Zora standing over the barbeque watching a nice thick stake cooking with a cigarette in his mouth and a Stroh's in his hand. Perhaps it never happened but nice to think it maybe did?
