    70 frame stencil

I am confused about the location of the frame stencil on a 70. The C3 registry has pics of two cars. One has a stencil infront of the rear wheel. And one has a stencil behind the front wheel. Was there a stencil in both locations? Where should it be on a Jan built 70?

What about the one behind the front wheel?

NOT 1970. Behind the front wheel is 1972.

          Yup.
That's why I said side of the frame.

16838 G28 Build date. Frame Stencil: passenger side, behind front wheel well, from a LS-5 454/390 Hp engine. Vehicle #00531, built 09 Jan, 1970.
This is what had me confused. It was right under the other pic showing it in front of rear tire. I just wanted to be sure where to try some Evaporust to see if I can read mine.

              Re: 70 frame stencil

I think that #531 frame stencil is an anomaly, but then there are some real unusual early 1970 features -- such as no VIN stamp on the stamp pad.

Do not fall into the trap of restoring your car like every other Corvette you see, unless every other Corvette you are looking at was on the assembly line right behind or right in front of yours. That one was no where near the plant when your 1970 was built.

Yours might be behind the wheel, but I would bet against it. Note the date on the stencil Patrick posted. Compare that date to the build date of your car. BINGO.

Here is a late 71 frame stencil

I usually don't get to add too much, but here are some shots of my late 71, #20992 and it's stencil location. It appears to have been in the transition between years as it has an intermix of some 72 parts and lacks a water shutoff valve and vacuum line for the heater core. Also, it was crayon marked on the driver's side of the frame with "1972". Maybe someone will find it useful or interesting.

                    Re: 70 frame stencil

I found it. It was not visable at all but I dipped a towel in some Evaporust and started blotting the area it was supposed to be and in a minute or so there it was. Dated earlier than I expected for a A22 build. But can't argue with what it says.

                      Re: 70 frame stencil

Glad you found it Keith. I found that using something wet like you did, made all of the chassis marks visible. Sometimes it required a light rubbing. I found only one other mark outside of the usual ones, shims and frame data.

Noticed your late 71 comments and thought I'd add to yours. Sorry to hijack the thread. I have 71 (#21467) with several 1972 details and two frame stencil's as well.

                          Dave,

Great shots. Your frame looks like it was in better condition than mine. I did not find the second frame stencil, although our dates are only 7 days apart (6-14-71). We should compare notes on the differences.

                            Joe,
The vacuum valve difference is interesting. Mine may be different than yours as it is an A/C car. Mine has the 72 style RW storage tray, missing windshield tails in the front door jambs, 70 style accellerator pad(really strange), unpainted starter, hex head bolts on the rocker tab, and the frame number as shown.

My 70 has some rattle can paint on some portions of the frame, but the car was never really restored. I'm wondering how to go about revealing the frame stencil without damaging it. I am fairly certain it is there, just covered up.

                              Any advice?
