    1963 spare tire carrier braces

I understand that there is early and late style spare tire braces in 1963. I wanted to know what the difference is and the changeover serial number. Happy New Year to all.

Re: 1963 spare tire carrier braces

    Scott,

Interesting question as I look in the assembly manual for 63 and 64 the same pics and part numbers are shown for both. A 64 design is shown for 63 assembly manual with Redrawn and Revised dates of 8-29-62 and 1-14-62.

I have had 63's in the 8, 10 and 17 thousands range that had what I guess would be called the 1st design hardware.

Looking forward to owners of really late 63's stepping up for this call.

I'd be happy to give an opinion about mine which is a 19,000 s/n, but what should I be looking for? Where can I find pics of both? I have a 63 AIM only. Can someone post pics of each or draw me a map?

Are you talking about these bolts?

There are at least 2 and possibly 3 different styles used in 63.

Here are pix of 2 63 style bolts.

I am referring to the steel "V" brace and in particular the square hole where the jack handle goes to assist in lifting the tire and lid. The later 64-7 types had a notch bent over and I have seen one with a piece of steel welded over the end. Is there another style?

              Sorry Scott.

Misunderstood your question. Can't help with the "V" brace.

                Scott,

The 63 carrier I purchased for my car has what looks to be a piece of square stock with a piece of steel welded to the back like you describe.

It's different than the 64-up in that the square stock is not tapered and does not have any bent tabs. I can take a picture if you want.

Scott, The car serial # is 03139 built second week November 62. This 1963 tire carrier did not come with the car so I can't say exactly if it's correct for early 63 but I believe so. I can post pics if you want.

Do you know if there is supposed to be some sort of gasket used on 63 lids and was this part undercoated or did someone get carried away with my lid? Thanks, Tim

Tim, As far as i know there was no undercoating on the lids or tubs from St. Louis.

Scott, I'll go out to the garage tomorrow and look at the V brace. I'll let you know what I see. I have an April 20th 63.

The tub should be natural glass (no undercoating), the V brace should be black and the aluminum rivets should be natural color.

My 63 got dinged for having those aluminum rivets painted.

                              Scott:

I looked at mine. I have the tab bent over, not a separate welded piece.

My SN is 19496. July built car.
