Could someone please de-code this: 2 CAM 7 2 70 W. I know it's a 3:36 built at the Warren plant. Would this rear be correct for an early Jan '71? Thanks as always.

Re: C3 rear end code
No, it wouldn't. For one thing, unless the car was built on January 2, 1971, the unit would fall out of the NCRS/NCCB "6 month rule" (which, incidentally, is very generous as it is).
More important, though, is the fact that the "CAM" axle code is a 1970 code. A different, 2 alpha character coding system was used for 1971. Is it possible that a very early 1971 might have used a 1970 coded rear end? Yes, it's possible, but a January, 1971-built car is not a very early 1971.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I expect the difference is the type of stub axles installed. One would use the standard u-bolt style axles and the other would use the heavy duty, cast iron cap type axles. The standard u-bolt type axles would be used on base engine cars and the HD on all big blocks and LT-1. However, I don't know which code represents which axle type.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
