    Painting the LT-1 Hood Stripe

    Hello,
How long should you allow a freshly painted hood to dry before using a stenciling kit to paint the LT-1 stripe? Any tips greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I would think that 24 hours would be more than sufficient. If you are using modern materials, the longer you wait, the less chemical adhesion you will have.

I'm using the PPG lacquer system. On a side note, My local PPG dealer had to order the the Elkhart Green. When the paint arrived, I took one of my t-tops in for a tint comparison. The paint match was so close right out of the can, that the dealer didn't think he could match it any closer. Total material cost to paint my LT-1 hood: $401.54
      1 qt of Elkhart Green = $110.57
      1 qt of primer = $64.55
      1 pt of Classic White = $70.18
      1 gallon of lacquer thinner = $46.24
      LT-1 Stripe stenciling kit = $110

        Hi Bryan,
I've been curious to know how your hood turned out since your posts about it a few months ago. From what you posted about the match from the can it sounds.... very good!?
I don't know if you've seen these pictures or not, they're from the Oct/Nov ,1970 issue of CORVETTE NEWS. If they're new to you, I hope you find them interesting.
        Regards,
        Alan

Alan, I should have it painted in a couple of weeks. I stripped the old paint off the hood but, I'm letting a guy I met at one of the local cruise-ins prep and paint the hood. He has painted several local hotrods and a few vettes. He has a paint shop in his backyard. Hopefully, it turns out well.

Thanks for the pics. I saved them to my Corvette folder. I took a bunch of pics of my hoods original stripe and gave them to the painter so he could get the stripe positioning right and to show him how imperfect the factory stripe alignment is. I instructed him to leave a very slight offset where the templates pieces meet up. Just enough so that you can see a break.

I haven't used it yet but, the hood should be painted in a couple of weeks. The kit is with the painter. I think I bought the kit from Phoenix Graphixs. I've had it for awhile, so don't consider that price as the gospel. I know that several of the usual Corvette vendors offer the kits. One that comes to mind is Paragon.

I was advised by the manufacturer of the stripe kits for LT1 -- Stripes & Stencils in Park Ridge, IL -- to not let the kits get too old or there would be "issues" with them. I have no idea what time frame "too old" is. Could it be 3-years or 30-years? I didn't ask that question.

Well, my kit's age falls into that time frame. I think it's about a year old.

A year doesn't sound too bad to me, but WDIK. I would think the worst that would happen is that the adhesive would not be sticky any more, or the protective paper would not peel off the adhesive. In either case you would know it before you started spraying.

How carefull were the painters back 72 to match up the stencils correctly to have the stripe perfect?

The original stripes had a feather look at the edges instead of a sharp line. The strip color kind of ran to hte body color. It's hard to do unless you use laquer paint.

                          Hi Ken
I've wondered about what you posted about the 'feathered edge'.
In the pictures from CORVETTE NEWS I posted, the painter is shown using some 'polishing material' of some sort right after removing the mask and tape. The cloth he's using shows some 'dark' color on it so I always figured he rubbed a bit of the strip off.
I don't know that I've every really noticed the stripe edge on an original LT1 hood, but I'll be looking now. Thanks!
                          Regards,
                          Alan

PS: Here's the 'headline' CN used for those pictures... "If you order an LT1 engine, most likely Ronnie Hunt will stripe the hood for you."

We are using lacquer paint. The kit comes with instructions on how to apply it using different paints. How would you duplicate the feather look?
