    Don,

It should be unpainted natural fiberglass.

Probably will have a narrow strip of black out paint just along the top of the fiberglass assembly. Not much, but I don't believe that it was masked off during black out.

The heater box would have been installed after blackout, so no paint should be present. I think you are referring to the sealer that may have been present along the edge.

don is correct. no black out paint but rather a tar-like substance sloppily dripping down over the housing and also on the firewall to a limited extent.rest of housing bare fiberglass. lacquer thinner will remove the mess without haqrming the fiberglass housing. mike

My 67 has a small amount of black goop. It looks as if it was put on the firewall, then the heater box bolted on and the excess pushed out slightly. I have one spot where the excess was enough to run over the edge of the heater box. It ran about a 1/2 inch down the box. It has A/C and most everything is hidden. Not near the amount on the picture posted. Dale

Some cars have none, some have a lot; it was used at water test for leak repairs.
