What motor and drivetrain combo is the best

    More Corvette trivia.
If you had a magic wand what would be the best motor, gerarbox and rear end package you would consider as the best all time Corvette for your garage.
Mine would be a 59-60 C1 in triple black with FI 290 hp, t 10 4 speed and a 4.11 posi rear end with off road exhaust. Oh those poor cloth tires would get the thrashing of their lives.
I'd love to here what people think is the best package.

Being a '62 fan, when it comes to a performance in that yr. it would of course have to be the FI. But, to me the top dog Corvette, is the '65 FI. I would like a 3.70 or 3.55 rear end. Now this would be for performance. Now, if you ask me something else I would enjoy, it would be a '62 with the 300hp motor. Just a nice turnkey car, no solids to play with. Then I would again go back to the C2's with the 350 hp motor and all the power toys with AC. Maybe either one of these cars would even be an auto.

Obviously the one you have. Love the one you're with, right?

57 283/283, t-10, 4.56:1. Of all the vettes i've got, this one will elevate the adrenaline level way beyond my 65 375 hp with 4.56 gears. i'd much rather steer the 57 with the throttle than the 65 with the steering wheel.and our c-2 Mark IV's are a close second. mike

Mike you have some serious gears 4.56 man that thing must rev it's head off. You obviously have a posi rear, yes I could imagine steering that thing on the pedal. Now that sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. The only problem on the highway @ 60 it must be reving it's poor little heart out.

Hey Roy you can do better than that !!! If you could have a pick of any drivetrain in any vette you would still pick your car. I thought you would be the one who would of wanted a 67 BB 4speed that would do damamge to all those rice burners out there.

My 57 FI 283/283 was like Mike's, 4:56 gears. Great for two lane mountain driving to.

My 65 fuel car came as a 3:55 gear. I added a wide ratio trans which gave me 2:56 first gear. 2:56 x 3:55= 9:08 off the line.

Now suppose you tried a close ratio 2:20 x 4:11= 9:04 off the line.

Not quite as good as a 4:56 close ratio (10:03), but all around driveability of a wide ratio with 3:55's was the way to go. And if you had a big block......well you really fried the tires.

Yeah I think there is something wrong with me. I thought I would start to drive sensable as I get older but it's not happening. I always start off by saying to myself before a journey in my hotties now drive sensable but somewhere along the line I turn into a devil and have to race everything that moves. Maybe a I could get hitmatised or start driving a slow car.
No No No No !!!! Not a slow car.

Off the line! Off the line! That's all you guys think about; stop light to stop light. I learned long ago to eat 4.56's, 4.11's, 3.70's, and 3.55's with my 3.36 close ratio 4 speed, and I never met a fuelie I couldn't eat either with my 340 hp 63. Guys with those low gears were begging to mix wheels so bad that they'd accept a 30 mph on up run. By the time they were all wound out, I was just shifting into third (my winding gear) and it was sayonara sucker!

Yes, my favorite is just what I have and have had for over 45 years. Never seen another SHP small block it couldn't run away and hide from. Your 30-30 cams and leaky holleys are just trash can bate.

                          Best for what?

                          I would choose a 327/300 in a 62 vette. 4sp with a 3:08 or 3:36 gears.

You are a fortunate man to have owned and driven those cars. Looking to adopt a son?
