Quanta gas tank vs. recoating original

My fuel tank is original and has some rust inside. Does it make more sense to reuse the original 65 tank or just go with the Quanta?

I would use a new tank. For one thing a fuel tank is a safety item. For another, I just don't think there's really any in-car, discernable difference between an original tank and a reproduction.

      Martin,

I tried using one well-known gas tank sealant. I followed the directions, cleaning the tank, putting a chain inside and scouring it and the cleaning it again. When it was dry a few days later I poured the sealant in and covered the inside. About three years later I noticed something floating insode my tank. It was the sealant coming off in sheets. I eventually removed all the sealant and bought a new tank. I may not be the sharpest pencil in the box, but I usually follow directions well.

Martin, Quanta's tanks are first class. I installed the new one and saved the old one for cloning in the future. The old one has cool stencil marks on the side.

Quanta makes high quality tanks at very reasonable prices. Install one, and you'll never have to think about it again.

Patch or reseal your old tank, and you'll always be wondering when the next leak will happen or you'll be forever worrying about rust (or the sealant, if it breaks loose) clogging the fuel system.

Jim; Quanta's new tank is the way to go. Had to replace my tank last year, I received no deducts at he Nationals this year. You will need to use your original sending unit or rebuild your's. The repo sending unit will cost you a point or two.

Martin, Quanta's tanks are not only the greatest they are quite afordable. You can't believe the horror stories I have to hear from my FI customers who plugged up their newly restored fuel injection with "sealant", etc. It makes me sick. Then I have to do the unit over again!!!
Don't even give it a second thought. Buy a new tank as we are lucky to have them. John D.

Buy a Spectra tank, Quanta's supplier. Tanks are made in Canada & China.
Their pricing varies all over eBay.

                  Quanta vs. Spectra tank

                  Ken,

Will a tank purchased thru Spectra have the OL Anderson stamping? I.E., is Quanta simply a reseller of the Spectra tank? Or does Quanta get Spectra to make a special version of the tank with the OL Anderson stamping?

With all the discussion about replacing the gas tank, I'd appreciate hearing what evidence one should look for and how to determine that the tank needs to be replaced, outside of an obvious leak. Mine is original circa July 63 and every way I look at it, inside and out, I don't see anything that tells me I should consider replacing it. What is the criteria?

Yes to both, i.e., they have the logo (which can't be seen once installed) and other sellers do not.

My tank looked fine also, inside and out. However of late when I would drive the car on the highway, it kept bogging down until I threw the clutch in. When I got home, and after consulting this board, I took a look in the tank as soon as I got it in the garage. The gas which was usually slightly tinted but clear was the consistency of thin coffee. Apparently the sediment and rust were agitating and fouling the strainer sock and maybe even the gas filter. I replaced it with a fabulous quanta tank complete with Anderson stamping. My problem was solved, I got to harvest a nearly complete tank sticker, I had peace of mind knowing all fuel lines were replaced as several had developed slow leaks (which also solved that vague gasoline smell in the garage) and the car runs fantastic now.

                            Charles;

Thanks for your post. I'll keep an eye out for the symptoms you noted. I already have the gas smell, but mine is w/o a closed system so it's to be expected. The only muddy looking gas I have seen was in one of my carbs after extensive use (I had been switching between two carbs that I have as I was experimenting to solve a percolation problem).
