1961 No Heater- Delivered with Anti-Freeze?

    Hi

I recently purchased a VERY original 61 from a friend. The car was ordered with no radio and no heater. I have the original invoice that shows the dealer charged $5.00 for anti-Freeze as an option. It certainly is not on the options list. Does anyone know if a 61 without a heater had anti-freeze from the factory? Maybe it was eliminated when a heater was not ordered. Thanks!!

I would think "anti-freeze" and heater have absolutely no relationship. You can crack a block with or without a heater if you have no anti-freeze at a given temperature.

In 1961, the heater was standard equipment, so you had to specify heater delete. It was no longer an "option."

If the "dealer" charged $5.00 for anti-freeze, then it was a dealer, not a factory issue.

If I could refer to the poster's question while I was answering their question (like we used to be able to do), I wouldn't have to post my response in 3 seperate tries. My memory does not retain 2 or 3 different questions in one viewing. Sorry... Dennis

            Thanks Dennis

I thought it was 1962 before a heater became standard. The Corvette Black Book and NCRS Guide don't show anti-freeze as an option so you would think it was included. The dealer charging for it made me wonder if there was no heater, maybe the factory didn't include it. Assuming a person ordered a car without a heater (rare) I thought maybe the factory would assume it wasn't needed. The car was shipped to sunny Florida.

Bob, My mistake. You are right. Heater did not become standard until 1962. Sorry. I thought some "export" cars might be delivered without anti-freeze, like Hawaii bound cars. Best, Dennis

Does this mean that the anti-freeze should be removed prior to having the car judged?

My memory is that cars delivered to California and other warm weather states did not receive anti freeze and that was the the cause of many aluminum radiators to fail earlier than those that did have protective the qualities of anti freeze.

                          Does that sound right?

                            No Edward,
anti freeze is not a judgeable item, further, the Judges are not supposed to remove the cap.
