Nonsense! API classifies engine oil base stocks into five groups, and the primary criterion is viscosity index. What a refiner can produce is a function of crude characteristics and processing.
Refiners sell oil base stocks to any marketer, which means Exxon Mobil sells to Chevron-Texaco and vice versa.
All this knowledge is on the Internet, and the recent oil article in The Corvette Restorer has links to Web sites that explain it all.
I'm curious- has anyone who posted to this thread studied those references?
