Nonsense! API classifies engine oil base stocks into five groups, and the primary criterion is viscosity index. What a refiner can produce is a function of crude characteristics and processing.

Refiners sell oil base stocks to any marketer, which means Exxon Mobil sells to Chevron-Texaco and vice versa.

All this knowledge is on the Internet, and the recent oil article in The Corvette Restorer has links to Web sites that explain it all.

I'm curious- has anyone who posted to this thread studied those references?

      Duke:

I made no pretense of my knowledge of modern oils. When I studied oil production, Esso, Enco, Pure, Sinclair, and a few other dinosaurs were top brand names. I stated that my knowledge was dated. That was my point. Maybe you should look up the history of paraffin crudes and you'll see what I'm talking about. There is more information about this on the internet than anyone would want, and there are many publications like "Lubes 'n' Greases" that are highly informative. This might be history, but it is not "NONSENSE".

As I had stated, viscosity is the primary factor. Perhaps you should have read my thread more carefully. The MSDS sheets tell you everything about the characteristics of any particular brand of oil.

As for the Restorer articles on oil, they are not available to me other than on DVD, therefore I have not looked at the references. Perhaps you would buy one for me?

        Re: Crankcase Oil

Dragging 50 year old issues, which no longer exist, into a discussion of modern engine oils merely confuses the subject, and there is much more to modern engine oils than you can find on Material Safety Data Sheets, which are primarily about hazard/safety issues.

Who do you think I am? Nancy Pelosi? If you really want to understand modern engine oil, buy it yourself.

I would never personally attack anyone on this forum, even if they are wrong. I am not wrong.

I have the utmost respect for everyone on this forum, including you. But apparently you don't.

P.S. Duke, it appears that we have strayed from the intent of this forum. Don just wanted to know what brand of oil to buy. Send me an e-mail or a personal message if you wish to discuss this further.
